The delivery center is still closed for the first week of January, but this was the only time we could get everything to work for our trip. So, we are having Mr. Behrends (EH Harms, Munich) take delivery of our car on 23-Dec-2005 and hold it for us until Monday, 02-Jan-2006.

We'll head straight to Garching from the airport and pick up the car from Mr. Behrends, whose office will be open Mon-Thu that week (Friday is a national holiday).

We did the coffee shop and the 2-hour-wait-to-see-our-car-for-the-first-time during our last ED 2 years ago, so that's all we'll miss. I'm actually looking forward to driving off with our car 15 minutes after we get there!

Anyway, thought I'd mention that this is possible just in case someone else out there wanted to take delivery prior to the ED center opening again on January 9th.

Got our production number last week and saw our VIN # for the first time last night on OC!! Can't wait to go!!

WOW. I'm surprised. I never knew you could do that. Any special paperwork involved?

When we were notified that the ED center would not be open for the first week of January, I called Munich and asked what our options were. They were very helpful and said delivery could be arranged through Gerd Behrends at EH Harms. So I call him a few minutes later, and he confirmed that he could take delivery of the car for us (prior to Christmas) and hold it until we arrive on January 2nd. Essentially, he will act as my agent and BMW will consider the car "delivered to the customer" as of 23-Dec-2005.

No special paperwork has been needed so far. I sent an email to Mr. Behrends with my production number/VIN # and copied the ED department in NJ. Included the delivery date and our arrival/pickup date. Waiting to hear whether he needs a power of attorney from me or not. Mr. Behrends is a great guy with good sense of humor and has been very nice to work with.

Two things to keep in mind:

1. EH Harms charges a 125 Euro fee for this service, payable in cash upon arrival. Well worth it for me, as this is the only week we could go.

2. The 14-day insurance coverage will start when EH Harms picks up the car, so depending on your itinerary, you may need to purchase extended coverage.

I'm still in the middle of this process, so if there is any additional paperwork involved, I'll post the info. Anyway, this is an unusual situation, but it was a useful solution to work around the fact that the ED center is closed for 2 weeks during this holiday season.

Jon, I split your post from the "when are you going to Munich" thread for 2 purpose:

1) We are getting OT

2) To clearify your assumption.

This is neccessary IMO because your statement and assumption is misleading other readers. And that is why I am stepping in.

For the record YOU MUST travel to Munich to pick-up the car. That is the condition of ED and no amount of money you can pay to circlevent this.

I don't mean to correct you publicly, and I hope you don't take it the wrong way. Just doing my duty as the moderator.

Thank you,

beewang

This seems like a really misleading subject to breach... we already have enough people that are just (greedily) looking for the discount and have no interest or intention of driving their cars in Germany. This could (would) spell doom for the program. It is not in the spirit or intent of the program.

Since I'm on the soapbox, I will say that encouraging everyone to make an ED insurance claim for every little nick in the car that they cause themselves will also continue to have our insurance options reduced for when we really need it. For instance, this year we saw the included insurance reduced in length from 30 to 14 days.

Keep encouraging everone to file a claim when they moan about wear and tear while on ED and we shall see where it lands us.

I hope people don't abuse the ED program. I think it's a wonderful program and would not be happy if they removed the ED program. I hope to do ED again in 2007 or after when they open the new Welt center.

If the person's only goal for the ED is to get a discount, then the ED is not for you. The purpose and biggest advantage is enjoying a trip to Europe with your car.
