Let me begin by saying that this was a fantastic experience!. There is just absolutely no other way to do a Europe trip!! Every single day we spent in Europe (Germany, Austria and Switzerland) was sunny and in the 55-60 F.
Having said that, here is my report.
Nov 5th - Flew into Frankfurt, rented a car and drove directly to Rothenburg reaching Rothenburg around 12.00 pm. Great place to be in and the Nightwatchman tour is a must. Stayed at this really nice hotel called Hotel Restaurant Kloster-Stueble. Just a charming little place with a bed and breakfast feel to it. Walked around the city and took in all sights.
Nov 6th- One thing I would suggest is to refer Frommers " Germany's Best loved Driving Tours". Most of my driving in Germany was based on this book and believe me when I say that you can have the most enjoyable drive with the best scenic routes if you incorporate some of the suggested routes from the book. From Rothenburg, drove through some of the best scenic routes to Bad Mergentheim, Tauberbischofsheim, and Wertheim. From Wertheim, took the A3 to Wurzburg. The highlight in Wurzburg was the Residenz, former palace of the prince-bishops. It is breathtaking. Walked around Wurzburg and drove back to Rothenburg by evening.
Nov 7th: At last, all the anticipation was going to turn into reality!!. I was going to see my car and DRIVE IT!!. Started for Munich around 8.00am in the morning. Reached the Delivery center around 10.30 am, submitted my paperwork and dropped family off, drove to the nearest Hertz location to drop off the car, taxied back to the delivery center and just setled down to have a cup of coffee when I was told my car was ready and waiting outside. Boy, left the cup of coffee and ran down with the family and met with the wonderful Mystic Blue 550i. Spent time going over everything in the car, and then turned on the ignition. I have to say the engine purring under the hood sounded great. Drove off feeling on top of the world towards Munich. Stayed at Hotel Acanthus on An der Hauptfeuerwache, and I should say a wonderful place to stay in. The only thing is the tight underground parking. Tried real hard to be careful but could not avoid the scrape on the front spoiler at the bottom edge on the drivers side. Well, took it in stride and did not freak out. Afterall, that is what BMW insurance is for. Walked to the Marktplatz, bought gifts to give away and toodled around. Got hungry and headed over to Hofrbrauhaus. Did I fail to mention that all along I never passed up the opportunity to drink Hefeweizen biers whenever I could.
Anyway more later....
