So on Google Earth I see roads marked with a prefix A, B, E, U and occasionally an L. What is the numbering system - I'm sure they have something really sophisticated.

Ah! That explains it - the EU even wants to control the road numbering!
So what does the U mean? Now that I observe it carefully, the U shows up only on highway intersections - some of the intersections have it and some dont.

Also, what do the numbers mean - A9, A92, A955 etc - do the extra digits mean anything?

Quote: A - Autobahn B - Bundesstraße E - EU number for Autobahn L - Landstraße | Umleitung means detour. B=Federal Highway L=County/State Highway (Rural road) The 3 digit A numbers work just like our Interstate system, connecting roads, bypass around cities etc. Correct me if I'm wrong jspira! The most confusion I experienced until I got used to it was that the closet destination on highway signs is at the bottom, not the top like here. You've probably figured out by now that "Ausfahrt" is exit.
