 Clarification Please!

I have been reading this forum for a couple of weeks and still have not gotten the concept of ED delivery. It seems like people are spending more time and money to travel to Munich to pick up the vehicle. Can someone please enlighten me on the benefits of purchasing via ED. How much money can you expect to save by purchasing this way? Do you still have to pay state sales tax, doc fees etc…? What is the process for negotiating with a dealer for European Delivery? I am looking to purchase a 330i and want to get the best deal possible. Thanks in advance.

1) I have been reading this forum for a couple of weeks and still have not gotten the concept of ED delivery. It seems like people are spending more time and money to travel to Munich to pick up the vehicle. Can someone please enlighten me on the benefits of purchasing via ED.

Advantages: lower price for selected models, ability to enjoy vacation in Europe, opportunity to drive 100+mph on autobahn, see where car is made (reservations for factory tour are separate)

Disadvantages: some banks don’t like ED, must wait minimum 20-30 days after car is produced to pick up, waiting for redelivery of car is generally 6-8 weeks but can be up to 3 months.

2)How much money can you expect to save by purchasing this way?

I saved about 12% off US MSRP for a 5 series. Since you are choosing the 3 series, you may save less.

3) Do you still have to pay state sales tax, doc fees etc…?

You will have to pay local state taxes, license and registration as you usually would. Some dealers may charge about a document fee. I paid $45 document fee.

4) What is the process for negotiating with a dealer for European Delivery?

You can: a) walk in a dealer and try negotiating face to face b) email the dealer telling them you want to do ED and listing the car w/ options you want and offer them a certain amount above wholesale invoice. c) do same as email but faxing to dealers (sometimes referred to as Rizzo method). I recommend do email or fax.

5) I am looking to purchase a 330i and want to get the best deal possible. Thanks in advance.

1st, you need to pick the model, and options that you like. You should know the European wholesale invoice price. 2nd, you need to know what day you would like to do your pick up in Munich, Germany. 3rd, you should find which dealers do ED. 4th, you will need to negotiate and agree with the dealer for a certain price above ED wholesale invoice. 5th, you should get your US Passport ready or Reentry to US with Visa to Germany prepared. Visas to Germany are not required for those with US Passport. 6th, you may consider looking at airline tickets and hotel reservations. 7th, you should consider how you will be paying for the car whether through lease, financing or cash.

Good luck. Excuse my quick typing. I'm getting sleepy.

Yes, I can see quite clearly you have 'not gotten the concept of ED (delivery)". ED is really for people who are drivers and a bit adventurous. EDrs want to drive on the autobahn's and autostradas, seeing some of the most magnificent sights in the world.
My suggestion, if you are just looking for the best deal, go find one, and forget about ED. ED was not implemented so you can save a few bucks on the purchase. And in the end, it could likely cost you more, or at least as much as picking the car up here. Of course, with ED, you get a Euro vacation thrown into the mix, but it sounds like Europe might be a burden for you.

If you want to drive your car in Europe, on the best highways in the world... then consider ED as a way to enjoy your car... and BMW helps subsidize the trip!

The spirit of the program is not to help someone just find a bargain. Yes we spend time and money (just think of all that expensive European gas you would have to buy) going many 1000’s of miles to pick up our cars. You really need to be into it for more than the money.

You and everyone but - the whole ED package is the deal - you weigh up the savings and the opportunity to do something a very small % of people have the opportunity to do with the fact that you could well end up a stubby short of a six pack - loopy - while playing the waiting game
Only 11 days to go

Thank you for the very detailed information! I really appreciate it. I already know what options that I want on the car and I have already begun getting quotes from various dealers. Now all I have to do is decide if ED is for me. Thank you again.
