I'm considering placing an ED order for delivery next June, so I can drive through European mountain passes before having the car shipped home.
Once an ED order is placed, what are the change/cancellation policies? (For example, suppose my current car breaks down and I want to quickly take delivery of a car from local dealer stock instead of waiting for ED delivery. Would I be allowed to do this in lieu of accepting ED delivery? What restrictions/penalties would I face?)

Since you live in California, any deposit you put down on the car is fully refundable.

If you don't pay the deal is stopped and since you're in CA you'll get your deposit back. Your dealer won't like you anymore, however. (or they might like you more because they usually make a bigger profit from non-ED sales) You won't get the ED price on the 'off the lot' car....just in case you were wondering.

Thanks. So I'm safe until 14 days prior to European pickup - which is about 2 1/2 months prior to US delivery.
But if I've already paid, or have already picked up in Munich but am still awaiting US delivery, am I 100% locked in to the deal? (2 months is an awfully long time to rent a car....but still cheaper than the difference between ED and US prices, I guess.)
Also, are deposits fully refundable in Oregon? (Several posters on this board have recommended purchasing in Salem, OR instead of in the Bay Area.)

Don't know about deposits in Oregon (send a priv message to Beewang...he'll help you) but Oregon has no sales tax and very low auto registration fees....so if you can "obtain" an Oregon address and drivers license you will save a gazillion dollars in donations to the California treasurer.
Once you've paid for the ED car....that's it. You own it (or you own the lease).
