My KLM flight out of AMS was delayed for almost 3 hrs today due to a problem with the aileron. We sat in the plane and waited until they figured out the problem and fixed it. But I made it home in one piece so that's good.

Well, it was another great ED trip. We had the car for exactly 7 days. Total 1265 miles driven, 23.5 average mpg, about €200 for gas. The car was a total joy to drive and I love SMG!

The weather was really great too. We had sunny and warm days, no rain whatsoever until the day we dropped off the car this past Wednesday.

The full report will follow soon, but here are some photos for starters.

Welcome back. Better that they fixed the aileron.

Assuming with two nav systems, you never got lost.

Looking forward to more photos.

Love the car! How's the SMG?

JSpira, I'm not sure what you meant by dual nav. I don't have nav in the car so that Garmin iQue M5 was my primary nav. And yes I managed to get lost a few times The voice instructions from the iQue can sometimes be misleading and after a while I learned to ignore the voice and just look at the display.

SMG has been a lot of fun to drive and it brings fun driving experience. This was my first, extensive driving with SMG. I've been driving manual cars for 17 yrs, never owned an automatic before. I'm a good stick shift driver and I shift smoothly.

My very first SMG experience was 2 yrs ago at a local Ultimate Driving Experience with a Z4. At that time I didn't like it because it was jerky and felt unnatural. But in the last 2 yrs I had read much more about SMG and other people's experience with it. Now I know what SMG is about and what to expect. Also there's going to be some learning curve and getting used to.

Fortunately about 2 months ago I had the opportunity to test drive a 545 with SMG. On that short test drive, I got a far better impression and I enjoyed it.

However, SMG is not without its quirks. I still wasn't able to consistently shift smoothly from 1 to 2 and 2 to 3. Having the Sport mode on seemed to help a bit but getting the timing right for that smoothness is tricky. Strangely enough, 3 to 4, 4 to 5, and 5 to 6 can be done smoothly far more easily. Also downshifts are a lot easier to execute smoothly.

I can't wait for more driving when the car gets here. I'll report more as I log more miles.
