For all you techies... what's the best tools for an ED

I'm leaving on Thursday and I am looking to take my digital camera and something else ??for my 5 day tour. I'm not a techie at all (bought my first ipod this week) so I could really use good advice. I'd like to be able to listen to music, retrieve email, scan road maps, book reservations and communicate with this board in case I get "lost" or need advice (first time to Germany). Can a laptop take the place of a cell phone? Thanks.

I bought a Monster power adapter for my ipod and it worked great. I put 'er on shuffle and let the tunes roll the whole time I was in Europe - no fiddling for English speaking radio stations!

You might want to make sure your adapter has a separate line out port, so you can charge and listen at the same time. My one regret was not buying a bit longer mini jack patch cord; it's only 8 inches long.

I don't know about the computer thing; someone else will have to advise on this...

You will need a laptop and internet connection to log on into this site while in Germany. A lot of hotels have computers/internet access in their business lounge that you can use incase u don't have a laptop. the other option is to use the cyber cafes that are pretty popular in the big cities.

Good luck

I found a trick that is great, instead of buying those lousy European adapters for the plugs.... buy a converter for the car! I found this one to be the best for car and airplane.... just for charging batteries, computers, phones, cameras etc. not for high draw items like hair dryers.
It turns the DC/car into AC. APC travel power adapter (compusa)

Also you may want to have a spare camera battery so you always have one charged, nothing worse than a dead camera when you are out and can't take more photos. Digitals go through batteries fairly quickly. I had the advantage of uploading all my images daily to my laptop so if my camera was stolen or somehow got skrewed up I didn't lose everything, but also so I didn't ever run out of room, not a worry if you have a large MB memory card.

That is all I can think of at the moment..... Best of Luck and enjoy

You can always spend some cash ($400-$1000)and buy a windows mobile pocket pc phone with built in Wi-Fi and go to any starbucks or wi-fi cafe and access the internet usually for free. These devices are very compact plus you also have the phone part of it which is GSM if you get a GSM one.

Have a look at the attached pic - I've used Imate Pocket PC on several trips to Europe. It's my NAV (with TomTom), and communication device with e-mail, instant messaging, and internet browser. It will do music, but marginally; Ipod offer much better sound quality. On my next trip, I'll be using this: http://www.imate.com/DETAILS_JASJAR.htm . You may consider JasJar for your 'do it all' device. Good luck.
