 Tips on Prague

Planning to visit Prague during my next ED and was wondering if folks who have been there could offer advise...

places to stay (with good parking)
how many days are enough for that city (are 2 nights/1.5 days enough or too much)
driving conditions (i did read that International Driver Permit is needed)
how safe is the car there
what all to do...

TIA

How car is the car there? please translate. If you meant "safe," well, you need to park in a secured garage and remember that Gerling provides 100% insurance. But that's equally valid in most places.

Just like any city, the enjoyment you will derive from a particular visit to a city will be derived directly from the amount of time you spend there. You can "do" any city in 1.5 days but in major cities (and Praha ranks up there), I'd recommend 3. You can spend a few hours admiring the Charles bridge

I've not driven so I cannot really speak to that issue. I'd say it's like any major Central European city - once you get there, you park and take the U-Bahn.

I stayed at the Hotel Cloister Inn, which I found nice and pretty affordable. They use their courtyard as garage and the only way to get in and out is to have the staff open a couple of double-doors.

I stayed 4 nights as I visited Dresden and Swiss Saxony as well from Prag, but 2-3 nights is probably good enough to get a feel for the city itself.

Driving is fine except you probably want nav if you don't speak Czeck.

The Ultimate City Walking Tour lasts 6 hours and is pretty nice for your first day to give you your bearings on the different areas and neighborhoods, you may want to visit more indepth later.

yeah, I meant safe (edited previous post).

Right now the plan is looking like:

Leave SF on Jan 6th (fri)
Arrive Munchen on Sat morning
spend time in Munchen till Monday morning - pick up car
Make day trip to Fussen and Innsbruck on Monday - come back to Munich
Tuesday head to Baden-Baden/Heidelburg and then finally reach Koln for the nite
Wed, Spend half day in Koln and then head towards Berlin.
Thursday, Half day in Berlin and then to Prague
weekend in Prague and then come back to Munchen on take flight back on Sun

I think this has been discussed earlier (just want to confirm) - one can drop off the car in Munich on a Sunday (you just need to complete the paper work when they are open)

You're trying to do too much, believe me.
Please consider the following as an alternative suggestion:

Stay in Munich, collect car on Monday.
Monday - drive to Fuessen, see Neuschwanstein Castle then back via Oberammergau. Drive to Garmisch, then direction Innsbruck. Stay overnight in Seefeld, just over the Austrian border - beautiful in January (it's a bustling resort for skiers and non-skiers alike).

Tuesday - Visit Innsbruck for the day, drive to Salzburg. Stay two nights in Salzburg, visiting the city itself and also the surrounding lake district (Salzkammergut).

Thursday - Drive to Vienna, stay 2 nights.

Saturday - Drive to Prague in the morning, stay two nights.

Monday - Drive to Munich and fly off (Harms are closed on Sundays)

Driving n the Czech Republic is no problem, I do it all the time. Stay at a hotel with its own garage such as the Ambassador, right on Wenceslas Square.

Have Fun but, for most enjoyment, don't overdo the driving!

I flew to Prague and took a taxi, so I can't help with the the getting there part.

We found once we got to the Castle in the hart of the city we could get ANYWHERE we wanted on foot. My wife and I did a whirl wind tour where we flew in that morning and flew out that night and still saw everything we wanted. We were tired but satisfied.

Here is what I would recommend for an agenda...

- Start at the Castle in the heart of the city. It has a musuem a cathedral and many other things to see. My wife and I got snookerd into a private guided tour, but since the exchange rates were still good then we didn't mind and the tour guide was VERY good.

- Head down the road from the Castle towards the river into the "old city". There is another huge, beautiful boroque cathedral and several nice restraunts across the street from the cathedral.

- Continue to head for the river going through the narrow streets of the old town. There are some really cool shops. Once you hit the river take the bridge across that used to have the city gates attached to it. The bridge has some pretty cool statues on it and dumps you right into the nice part of the "new town". This side has a large number of boroque buildings and opra houses, many of the world famous chrystal shops, and this really cool mechanical clock (I forget it's name) on the main plaza.

- Stroll over to the Jewish ghetto. There are some really neat Synagogs and the Jewish cemetary is quite interesting as well. I am not Jewish, nor do I know anyone Jewish, but still found the ghetto a very interesting place from a cutural and historical stand point.

I was in Prague before the Checz Rebublic joined the Euro Zone, so everything was very cheap. Regardless of prices, my wife and I felt that Prague was probably our number 1 favorite European city we visited the while in Europe for three years. Its beautiful and the people are very nice. Just watch out for the cab drivers...they understand capitalism FAR to well
