Losing my key cost me $1,000 !!!
Here´s a word of advice following my own experience last month. I collected my new 645 convertible from Munich, got as far as Garching to get the train into Munich, then duly lost the key. The other keys were inside the car and in my baggage in the trunk.
It was then I realized how secure the locks are on a new 645! BMW´s emergency response guy informed me that, being a Friday evening, a new key could not be made till Monday (no good to me as I had to fly to Spain the next day). They also informed me that the lock could not be picked by a locksmith and that the car would have to be towed the next day to the BMW dealership in Munich that would be open on Saturday. I therefore had to stay overnight in Munich - during Oktoberfest time only $300 or so!
The next morning I accompanied the vehicle (requirement) as it was towed in and the dealership begand the necessary work, drilling through a hole in the trunk´s lock area to obtain access to there. Three hours later the trunk was open and I retrieved my spare key. The price for the towing and the work was another $400.
By that time I had missed my flight and had to re-book another.
The nightmare cost me over $1,000 so be warned, make sure you keep one of the spare keys - or the plastic one - somewhere accessible so that if you lose one you wont get locked out - especially at weekends!

As has been posted here many times, theft is not covered under the Gerling insurance policy if you cannot produce the car keys and registration documents. I was very anal about this on my trip and made sure that the spare set of keys was either on my person or locked in my hotel room safe at all times.

Soo... I take it this is your first bimmer aye Yes!! I think you are making a VERY good point and NOT something been discussed before with regards to the keys and BMW.
I discovered the samething 6 years ago with my first 540. Accidently locked my key into the trunk. I called AAA and as soon as they heard BMW they laughed and said there is NUTHING they can do about it. Something about "High Security" vehicle and can't be "slimjimed". The only thing they can offer is to send a flat-bed truck and tow my car to the nearest dealer.
They did ask me if i had the spare key and I laughed and told them that I have and it is at where its suppose to be, in the trunk with my all my other keys
I was able to call my wife and have her deliver her keys to me some 30 miles away in a rainy night. It was a short conversation night as she certainly was not happy playing the key delivery gal Lesson learned!! I have yet to lock my keys in the trunk since. I always double check for physical possesion of my key before slam down the trunk lid.
cheers,
beewang

| | Reply » Losing my key cost me $1,000 !!! | Since I got Comfort Access on my car, I have no choice but to take the keys with me. If I don't, then anyone can touch the door handle, hit the start button and steal my first born child (the car, not a slimy kid).
