ED in JAN
so I am thinking of an ED in Jan and would have loved to drive down to Italy; but as per many people's suggestion - it might be a better idea to head north instead of south to avoid travelling through the alps.
Has anyone gone to Italy in Jan - how bad is the drive? Is it really impossible to go to Italy in Jan??
Looking for suggestions on what to do in the north - the only route that I can think of is Munich to Fussen/Innsbruck to Baden-Baden to Hiedelburg to Koln to Berlin (might skip this too) to Prague and then back to Munich.
already been to Salzburg, Amsterdam, Paris, Zurich, Brussels, London (among others) - and don't care to go to these places again
Can anyone make any suggestions for places that I could have missed?
I was in Paris last Jan, and it snowed the day I landed - but there was nothing on the roads later that day. I am thinking that this is typical of how long snow remains on the ground during winter.
Is black ice common on the Autobahn's?? If anyone has done ED in Jan/winter - I would love to hear about their experience as well as gather the invaluable pointers that they could provide.
TIA

What date are you expecting to pickup? I am shooting for Jan 18th.

beewang | yes, I was angry and pissed. Definately staying away from Chris Neal and all of BMW of Fremont. Insurance is paying only ED price - so thats all I can afford at this point.
I am thinking of a pickup date of Jan 10th (the 1st day they re-open after x-mas holidays).

If you were getting AWD I´d say not to worry (presuming non sport tires) but it´s something where you need to make these plans based on the immediate 5 day forecast.
How about Hamburg, Köln, and other more northerly cities?
It´s as prevalent as anywhere else actually. I´ve seen accidents caused by it. Fog (nebel) is very common in winter.
My first E.D. (well my first euro delivery of a U.S. spec car) was in January. Fortunately, I and the car stayed 9 plus months in Germany and environs so the fact that I did very little driving in the winter didn´t upset me. However, it was very snowy and I limited my travels to Autobahn treks, no B roads. | Thanks for the advice. I am considering sports package, so that will not go well with the winter roads. Already been several(5/6) times to koln; and have also visited Hamburg (sleazy!), Berlin and Vienna.
