You don't really, we didn't and they did not ask us too. It had the same crap on it when it got to the dealer here in KC. But...you will pass a Total (?) station just before entering the airport campus (About 2k from TT) and that's where everyone goe's who wants to. Just keep your eyes open and you can't miss it.

I was told the same and investigated with BMWNA. Seems there's no such requirement but the Paris drop-off folks like the car to be clean so that they can more easily check for any damage. They didn't admit this (in fact ignored e-mail messages from BMW NA on this matter) but the BMW NA folks surmised that this was the real story.

I figured I too would like the car clean for the same reason: so that they would have no excuse to say there was pre-existing damage.

When you drop off the car there's a check-box nthe sign-in sheet where he TT folks can indicate whether the car was very dirty or normal.

I washed the car at the Total gas station near Terminal 3. You can't miss it. Watch for the "voiture lavage" signs. Pre-pay inside the gas station and they'll give you a little card to insert in the machine outside.

I went to a self serve wash not far from the dropoff because I didn't want any scratches from a gas station car wash. Unfortunately, I couldn't tell you exactly where it is. But it's around if you want to look for it.

I didn't wash mine before drop off, but I had just driven in pouring rain for an hour and didn't see the point. Fortunately, it stopped raining long enough to turn in the car and get to our hotel; oddly it was the only time in a two week vacation we saw rain, so maybe Mother Nature was just giving me a free wash.

The reason I heard for the wash was US Dept of Ag not wanting to spread hoof-and-mouth disease.

The same Total also has a self service car wash if you're worried about damage from the automated car wash.
