The 2 words doesn't even sound alike 2) Speaking of German... How did we go from Deutschland to "Germany" Again.. who made this determination/translation?? 3) and Finally... 1) No idea 2) The word Germany is derived from Germania, the latin word for Germany. 3) The state of Bayern was developed by the Bajuvari (Bavarii), which was a large teutonic tribe that was settled in today's Czech Republic. They got powerful and expanded their settlements to Austria and to the lands what we call Bayern today.

My cousins always told me that it is because Germans (especially Bavarians) just want to have their own special word for everything!

I think it goes back to translation deficiencies. For example, in Serbia (former Yugoslavia), Belgrade is how the west knows the city. In Serbian, it is Beograd...which means White City.

You think that's bad?
In Italian Muenchen is Monaco. Yes, "the other" Monaco is also Monaco. The German Monaco is "Monaco di Baviera"
