What if I don't ship my car to US?

Hi,

I'm new here and have been enjoying this forum, because of very useful information you guys provide. I have a question that I have not been able to find an answer thus far.
I'm US citizen, but I spend a lot of time in Europe (not in Germany). What would happen if I buy a car in US and pay for it in full, go to Germany to pick it up and never ship it to US?
What would happen? I would drive to another country and use my car there. Your advise appreciated.

Thanks,
-Yustas

From the link above:

"You may keep your car in Europe up to 6 months after delivery (there is a 16% penalty tax if your car is not exported within the 6-month period). Cars leased through BMW Financial Services must be exported within 30 days, and cars financed through BMW Financial Services must be exported within 90 days."

How would BMW enforce this 16% penalty tax if I paid for the car in full?

Thanks,
-Yustas

You'd have to pay the penalty when you go to export at customs. Not to mention that your registration would expire after 6 months and you'd get a ticket.

Yes, he'd get a ticket - but probably not the bill for the ticket. Still, it wouldn't be fun to have the car impounded either.

Why not just buy a car in Europe? They have so many more options available anyway. Personally I'd get a 330d if I could.

Those diesels are awesome. Great performance, great consumption, what more could you ask for!

Thanks for your input guys...To answer your questions.
Cars in Europe a lot more expensive vs prices in US. That is the reason not to buy in Europe...I'm not sure I understand where would I pay penalties?
I buy a car in US and pay for it in full. Then go to Germany, pick up my car (fully paid for) and go to another country (let's say France or Ukraine, since I can travel around Europe for 3 month or so) and never come back to Germany or any other country in this car.

What am I missing?

Thanks,
-Yustas
