Soliciting ED itinerary advice..
Getting close..
My plan is hotel in munich night before pickup, then first week;
Drive to eastern Switzerland via Berchtesgaden, Innsbruck -- 2 nights at B&Bs in Switzerland then to Paris, stay with relatives a few days - tour Normandy beaches, back to Paris. M3 1200 mi insp/fluid change @ Paris BMW dealer then back to Germany for Autobahn.
Second week:
Try to find "target of opportunity" lodging rather than plan all in advance. Reasoning is might be more fun than having to make a "schedule" -- also copilot is avid photog, so might want to explore.
THE QUESTION: Am I being stupid to consider not having solid reservations well in advance for second week??
Maybe e36m3r or other(s) with ED experience could offer opinion?
["Charts are great, but local knowledge will keep you off of the reefs.]
Thanks in advance for any input.

Jerry | Sounds like a great plan and no, unless you are going peak tourist season, you shouldn't have a problem making reservations.

Jerry | You should be fine, but I would get some info together on various possible cities/towns, so you at least have a list of places to call in each possible stop. Obviously you can't cover all bases, but it's comforting to know what might be good.

My preferred Euro vacation mode is pick two or three areas to visit over a couple of weeks, wing the hotel reservations (so that way we're flexible if we want to stay later or leave earlier) and enjoy! Its much more fun if you have the time to immerse yourself in the local culture.
The only caveat is if you plan on visiting a particular area during an event (i.e. - You want to visit Munich at the end of September). In addition, there are lots of little "fests" and other events going on throughout the year so if you want to visit a particular area, you may do a quick bit of research to make sure you're not left out in the cold.
| | Reply » Soliciting ED itinerary advice.. | My plan is similar. I am leaving in just two more days! I did get firm reservations for my first night stay, but then I just printed out contact info for a number of hotels in areas I am likely to be near and I will call them or just stop in as my plans become more apparent along the way. I really want to be able to be flexible on exactly where I make it each day, with driving and sightseeing being primary objectives. (I haven't forgotten about the food and the bier though ) Everything I've read suggests this should not be a problem. Worst case, I end up searching a little extra for a place to sleep, so not such a bad downside for the upside flexibility.
