tipping and currency question in europe
should i bring my personal check book? i plan on just using my debit card for euro withdrawal and charge everything else to cc. I hear that in germany the tip is included in the bill, is it true for all occasion (restuarant, hotel, taxi, bar)? when i visited the italian tourist site, they said tips aren't included in bill, only service charge. what about the other countries i am visiting- austria and swiss, besides italy and germany. i plan on adding 20% to the total bill, just to be on the safe side. thanks

20% is considered a very generous tip in Germany....a few waiters acted surprised and pleased that I tipped so much....maybe someone else could chime in on this. I've heard 10% is normal.

It's tip, you pay it if you like their service, otherwise it's called tax. Your checkbook got no use out of this country.

A service charge is included. A tip of 5% -7% is normal and expected. If service is PP, stiff just like the USA.

Unlike the U.S., where servers depend on tips for a good part of their wage, this is not the case in Europe, where almost all restaurants include a ,,service charge`` in the price of the meal and servers earn a salary (yes, there will be exceptions to this by unscrupulous restauranteurs but let´s look at what´s fairly common in our example today, class )
Tipping above the charge has become a custom to a certain extent but not nearly the way it is in the U.S. This change has probably come about due to ,,foreign´´ influence from countries where tipping is a
Traditionally, Austrians and Germans rounded up the total (also works this way in a taxi). For example, if the total were 3,45 E, I might leave 4,- €. Same thing is the total were 3,55 €.
Does that help a bit?

Debit and credit card plan is fine.
20% is not necessary or customary. See my earlier post about rounding up.
