aaah.... myswitzerland.com has links to places to stay including chalets and hotels. When I was doing a search there appeared to be a lot of nice quaint towns there - choose region as 'Eastern Switzerland'.

I second Jon's recommendation of Lindau im Bodensee (although not personal experience with teh Bayerischer Hof). A close second for me would be Meersburg which is further west past Friedrichshafen. My hotel recommendations there would be zum Bären or Hotel Wilder Mann.
I've also hear many good things about the small towns in Austria and Switzerland that border the Bodensee.
Assuming clear weather, your jaw will drop when you see the reflection of the snow covered Alps on the lake...
