ED with a 3 year old kid

I've seen some posts on the ED forum about taking kids on the trip. I'm planning to buy an 06 3 series and have always dreamed of doing European Delivery. Thing is, we have a son who will be 3 1/2 next spring when we would probably do the trip. We had thought about waiting until he was older to do the ED, but I'm not eager to wait another couple of years before returning to BMW (currently have an Audi A4). I'm interested in hearing from others who have done ED with young children, including what things you did that were fun and entertaining for the kids without detracting too much from the enjoyment of driving your new BMW in Europe.

Well I haven't done ED (not *that* kind of ED) but I have driven round large chunks of mainland Europe with my toddling daughter in the back. I would keep your driving stints short and sweet, and get the most comfortable car seat/high-back booster you can find. If you don't want to bring one with you, car seats are if anything cheaper in Germany than they are in the US, and familiar brands will be available (including Romer, which is the mainland European Britax brand).

If you want, some companies sell DVDs you can hang off the back of the front seat, for not that much money. An integrated DVD player is available from BMW in Germany, but will cost you thousands.

Also get something to protect the back of the seat in front of your son. He will kick seven bells out of it, no matter what it's lined with .

I say leave the kids with the in-laws.

I did my ED with my 3 year old daughter back on May this year and having a portable DVD player saved me from harm. I took as many movies as I could pack and she was so happy to see them that she even forgot about me ...Anyway I took our car seat on the plane and it was no trouble at all, I checked it at the Airplane door so that they would give us back at the gate not at the baggage claim. Get some water on bottles though, my daughter didn't like the "bubble water" as she called it.

I grabbed these threads via a simple search on this forum.

By all means bring the kid along. Just admit that you're getting a family car - on the E90, they even went so far as to do away with the spare tire so they could carve out a well for diaper bags underneath the trunk. If you are buying this kind of car, it's ridiculous not to bring the actual family along to pick it up.

I did an ED in July with a 2yr old daughter in tow. We had a blast. Rest assured that Germany is a family-friendly country. Every restaurant we visited had high chairs. The charcutiers will lop off an extra sample of your purchase just for the kid. The ice cream is the world's best, playgrounds are easy to find, and the forests, castles and gardens are beautiful.

No question about it. Save the art museums and the opera for another trip later on. But bring the kid on this trip.
