 ED Itinerary - Seeking Input

Hello, Comrades,

I've been cruising the forums for the past two months as I pondered my upcoming 330i purchase. Thanks for all of your unknowing assistance. I'm glad to now be a new member. It's nice to know there are many other addicts anxiously awaiting the fix of their first Bimmer via ED.

My wife and I will be doing ED on 4 Oct and plan to spend the following week in Munich/Venice/Nice. We want to enjoy some good driving (about 800 miles), but mostly relax in warm weather (for October) while seeing the core sights. Here's our preliminary plan:

Day 1: Fly from Tucson, AZ, towards Munich. Sleep on plane overnight.
Day 2: Arrive in Munich at 0830, take public transport to Delivery Center. Tour Munich on foot in afternoon. Take Munich factory tour if available. Stay at Marrriott Renaissance Munich?
Day 3: Continue touring Munich / Dachau.
Day 4: Depart in a.m. for Venice. Drive through Austria and then the serpentine Stelvio Pass. Will weather likely be a problem on Stelvio? Arrive in Venice. Can anyone recommend a nice mid-priced hotel with secure parking and easy access to the city?
Day 5: Tour Venice
Day 6: More Venice
Day 7: Depart Venice in a.m. for the French Riviera.
Day 8: French Riviera (Cannes/Nice/Monaco area) Which area is the best base for exploring the area? Can anyone recommend a nice mid-range hotel?
Day 9: More French Riviera. Heart-wrenching drop-off of car at Harms office in Nice for shipment to US.
Day 10: Fly out of Nice in morning for return to Tucson.

I appreciate your input/suggestions.

As I've said elsewhere, I wouldn't bother pickign up that first day (unless that's a Friday). Pick up the second day. Do as much of munich as your sleep-deprived self can do the first day. Pick up the car first thing the next day, drive straight to Dachau. Come back to Munich and park, tour a bit more, and pack.

Weather not likely to be a problem, buy one never knows.

Looks like a great itinerary. Here are my comments:
Day#3 Dachau was a very interesting worth visiting place
Day 8 I stayed in Ville-Franche-sur-mer 2 nights back in March 05. You avoid the Nice traffic by staying there. You have to understand the proximity to Nice and Monte Carlo. It is literally 10minutes w/out traffic. I stayed 2 nights in Nice but really didn't care too much for the place. I was very nervous driving in Nice and only used the car for the longer trips. We really enjoyed Monte Carlo. I would have stayed there but I am sure it is more expensive. Remember to drop an e-mail to the Nice drop off location and obtain a confirmation. You may even have to call as they did not respond to my second e-mail. I highly recommend visiting Saint Paul De Vence which is 30min. from Nice and is a very quaint walled city where you can enjoy a nice lunch. Eze is another nice nearby place/city. If you need Hotel recommendations for Nice you can PM me, I would not recommend the Hotel in Ville-France(La Flore). It was a bit run down for the price. I can recommend the one in Nice. Venice is one of my all time favorite places. We avoided it this time b/c of parking and we wanted to see something new. I still would have gone there.

I think it's a great itinerary. Try priceline for 5* or 4* hotels in Munich, but look in biddingfortravel.com first to see what's available and how to bid.

Great itinerary.

#2. Marriott Renaissance is fairly nice. Check priceline for a great discounted rate. Mine was $65 in March
#3. Dachau is very educational with a lot to see. Spend an afternoon and take the inexpensive guided tour on site. Not far from Munich so easy to do in the am or pm.
#4. Venice - get a good detailed map of all the streets! Its very confusing to determine where you are when walking. Use the canals for direction. Enjoy a gondola ride, but save your money since they are pricey!

I've always encouraged my friends that are travelling to Europe to avoid chain hotels. Not that they are poor accomodations but the Gasthauses and small hotels just give you a much more intimate feel and closer connection with the surrounding culture. Unless price is your only object, I'd recommend a locally owned/operated hotel in Munich (although I've never stayed in the Mariott for reasons mentioned above). Many have given there recommendations here (Acanthus, Torbrau, Hotel Asam, etc.) but other than that sounds like a great trip!
