ED in November
I am planning ED in late October/early November. Just wondering if anyone has been that time of year and what are driving conditions? Would like to see Berchtesgaden and surrounding area, but don't want to hassle with driving in snow. Should I head south to Italy instead? Any suggestions for a 7/10 day stay would be greatly appreciated.
| | Reply » ED in November | I did my first ED in Nov 2000 and the weather was very good. Temperature were in the mid- 50s to low 60's daily. Just one day of rain on the day we were set to go back to the States. Our itinerary took us from Munich, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Fussen, Zurich, Freiburg, Rothenberg, Heidelburg and finally, Frankfurt.

| | Reply » ED in November | I did my first ED Nov. 14 2003 - drove all over Germany. The weather wasn't bad and didn't make the trip any less enjoyable. It was a little rainy/foggy a few days. Temps ranging from 30 to 50. Considering we hadn't had any rain in CA in a few years it was a welcome change of pace.

| | Reply » ED in November | We drove from Munich down to Milan, and then from Milan up to Zurich. There are 2 different tunnel routes from Switzerland to Milan, and we did one one way and the other the next.
At that time of the year, it was snowing, and the less travelled route was cleared of snow on the roads, but had a pretty good covering off it. Temperature was probably around high 30s. I took it easy, given that I had summer performance tyres. For a while I was worried that I would need to have snow chains as we drove higher up. The police were actually pulling semis over - perhaps to confirm the road conditions for the drivers. However, we arrived without incident, the roads were always clear, no ice that I noticed, and it was just rainy. But if the roads are clear, this is a great route - windy roads, less traffic (only 2 lanes either side in the mountains).
The other route doesn't go as high, is much more frequently travelled, and was clear - definitely no problems. I would expect early November, unless there was unseasonably early winter weather, to be fine. But plan for the worst, and enjoy the better!
Cheers.
