london hotel recommendations?
Does anyone have recommendations on london hotels? I plan to drop my car off for shipment back to the US once I get to london via chunnel, so I am wondering where in london I should find a hotel. Preferrably the hotel is centrally located to facilitate sight seeing.
thanks

Seriously though, I used the "eurocheapo" website and a few others while traveling over there and that worked out pretty well. In one case, I booked a hotel room in a cyber cafe near Pic. Circus and walked across the street, into the hotel, and had to wait for the servers to propagate the room reservation before checking in. But I saved about 60% off the list rate that way.
There are usually some good rates available at places out by Kensington Gardens / etc., just a tube ride or 10 minute walk outside the retail core.

Seriously, IIRC the drop off point for ED London was near the A4 near Heathrow. If that is the case still, I would consider a Heathrow Airport hotel for any post-ED trip sightseeing if I was in your shoes.
I've stayed at a number of hotels near and around LHR, and consistently two that stand out are the Rennaissance and the Crowne Plaza. The Rennaissance is a Mariott property and both the LHR and Gatwick properties get high marks from me for overall experience.
The Crowne Plaza is at a lower price point in keeping with its distance (2-3 miles) from LHR terminals 1-4, but it is a good property.
Both of these properties, like many/most of the LHR hotels, are served by the "hoppa" bus, which is something like a 3 Pound one-way/5 Pound return from the hotel to the Terminal. The point of this is that the Picadilly Tube line terminates at Terminal 3; meaning you can hoppa on the bus to the terminal, then get a multi-zone tube pass on the tube and get into the centre of town fairly cheaply.
This is an alternative to paying 350 Quid a night for a hotel "in town", and at the end of your trip you just hoppa over to the terminal and fly home...

The Mayfair district is between Knightsbridge (shopping) and West End (theater). It's also walking distance to Buckingham and eastern edge of Hyde Park. Typically, I'll stay at a major chain (InterCon, Hilton Green Park, Hilton Mews, Park Lane Sheraton, Le Meridien) for the points and upgrades. The Ritz Hotel and Atheneum Hotel are also in the area if you really want to splurge.

You should be able to find some cheaper hotels by searching around, Earls Court and Bayswater maybe good areas - make sure it's walking distance to a tube station.
The $ to Pound rate will kill you too.

You can also catch a local bus (1.2 pounds) to the tube stop to one of the Hounslow stations (I think West) and can buy a full day pass for all tube and busses in the city.
Use "British Car Parks" to get your room reservation, as they have discount deal rates, I think ours was in 60-70 pound range for a good room.
The chunnel was quite expensive when we checked, but the hovercraft from Calais to Dover was about 1/3 the cost, you may want check this option out.
