ED Package Arrival! 20 days and counting down..
The package was waiting for me yesterday, 20 days to go. It seems like forever ago that I placed the order (E90 Titanium Sport Package, Premium and Nav). Thanks again BEE for your generousity and getting me scheduled for the Euro DVD, this will certainly maintain a somewhat serene cabin with my wife and directions!
Itinerary so far and accepting any suggestions.
Day One- -Munich pick up car and drive to hotel (Bayerischer Hof or Kings First Class) Leaning toward Kings FC (Thanks Zauberhias) -Shop and walk around Munich -Augustiner Garten (stumble back to Kings)
Day Two -Munich to Salzburg -Ice Caves?? Any thoughts??
Day Three -Munich to Rothenburg -Romantic road to, Autobahn back to hotel
Day Four -Munich to Garmish PK via Autobahn (or suggestions)
Any suggestions for dining etc. would be welcomed.
Thanks in advance!

| | Reply » ED Package Arrival! 20 days and counting down.. | Thank you. DeSimone in Marlton. Dan Kirby CA Long standing relationship with them, and most importantly they know what they are doing re: the ED process. Many other dealers that I called (to keep Desimone honest) were IMO clueless about ED! Great staff here.

I drove more then 600 miles in one day. I see you bought Navi, which is a good thing. I would highly recommend getting navi dvd from Bee for the trip.
The ED package from BMW has a book that contains different trips. Very handy, if you plan on going different places. If I have four days I would not stick around Munich much. Use the Euro Trip book and go see Paris, Swiss Alps, Venice etc.. Plan for longer trips that will be more fun. Drive to Salzburg is probably two - three hours from Munich. Country roads are more fun to drive then autobahn. Thats where you will really see the handling of your car.
Have fun.

Thanks in advance! | While in Munich, you can't go wrong with any of the dining (and drinking) fare at the big four breweries - Augustiner, Hacher-Pschorr, Franziskaner, Löwenbraü. Some of these have multiple locations (Augustiner has three or four in and around Munich with the Augustinerkeller my fav for outdoor dining). You could spend a few weeks in Munich and not hit every Biergarten.
As far as GAP (Garmisch-Partenkirchen), we've eaten and stayed at the Gasthof Fraundorfer a few times. Food was good and they have live entertainment (Friedl on the squeezebox) plus the Fraundorfer Bierschnapps is . There can be lots of Ami's (americans) there - good or bad depending on how you feel about speaking english in germany. I personally think its a turn off but I know German and am sometimes embarassed by how clueless and uncultured some Ami's can be. One of my friends just stayed and ate there and he complained about flies in the restaurant. Thats par for the course though since most places in that area (and Germany) don't have AC. So you choose between hot and stuffy or open windows and nature. Also, a couple things worth the time in GAP are the trip to the Zugspitze ONLY if there is clear skies (take the cable car or Seilbahn if you're in a hurry). It can cost a mint (€40-50 a person, IIRC) but the view is unbelievable on a clear day with no haze. Also, the Partnachklamm (Partnach gorge) is worth a hike. Its taken a lot of traffic so there are paved walkways but its still worth a few hours for the trip up and the Seilbahn from the Forsthaus Graseck back down. You'd pass by a few gasthauses so food/beer is handy. Those two would be good highlights for a single day in GAP. There are tons of other things to do regarding hiking/biking/swimming and shopping but for a single day, the Zugspitze and Partnachklamm are worth the trip.
Regarding a day in Rothenburg - be forwarned that Rothenburg can be over run by tourists in the summer (especially on the weekends) so arrive early before the buses do (or better yet, stay late after they've left). Oh, parking may be tough too. The typical things would be to walk the wall (ramparts) and visit the Kriminalmuseum. For shopping, the wife will undoubtedly be drawn to the eternal Christmas that is Käthe Wohlfahrt - you'll need the NAV to get yourself out of the store once she's taken you through all the little nooks and crannies. If your wife likes that stuff tell her to look at Käthe Wohlfahrt but buy across the street at Friese (prices were cheaper). Other than that, there are lots of things to do inside and outside the city walls. On the trip along the Romantische Strasse, you might want to pay a quick visit to Dinkelsbühl (arguably a more "authentic" medieval city that has far fewer toursits) or to Bamberg (not on the Romantische strasse though).
Salzburg - To be honest, there is not much to Salzburg. There is the fortress (Festung Hohensalzburg), Mozart's birthplace, the salt caves, the Sound of Music tour, and the palaces/churches. It is an interesting city because of its history but to me Salzburg is a better place for soaking up the surroundings than really seeing anything in particular - a beer or two by the Salzach river, a leisurely stroll through town, a coffee and cake at one of the little outdoor cafes. However, this is another one of those cities that can have toursits by the busloads and sparse parking so avoid the herd by coming early or staying late.
Anyway, hope this helps and it wasn't too obvious that I miss Germany. Sigh, if anyone in Germany is hiring, I'll work for
