 European Communication Capability

We are going to Munich for the ED of our 325i in September. We are going with friends that are also picking up a 325i. We will be touring together in our separate cars around Germany, Prague, and Switzerland and would like to be able to communicate with each other while driving. Can American CB radios be used in Europe? Is there an inexpensive way (other then purchasing or renting "world" phones) to communicate with each other? Thanks....

Are those FRS radios legal in Europe? (If they are, you'll see a rounded C E symbol somewhere.) I suppose it doesn't matter as long as you keep moving. It would be really bad luck, however, to discover they use the same frequencies as the police!

A strong word of caution with the FRS radios folks...

Be VERY careful using them. Here in the US, the frequencies those radios operate on are designated for those types of radios and they are liscensed by the FCC. In foreign countries those same frequencies are used for other things and the FCC certification doesn't mean squat.

You can put yourself in a position of being arrested and/or having the radios confiscated by local authorities. You also run a very strong chance of disrupting local Police/Fire/Emergency response or other types of communications.

I deal with these types of issues at work and have seen all sorts of legal and technical problems arrise. I have seen situations where equipment has been impounded, people detained and huge fines being levied.
