Euro Trip 2005 Part Deux - Italy itinerary

Well...ED is addicting so we will do one again in October for a 330i.

Anyway, itinerary this time is Italy(never been there) so input is appreciated.

Oct 19 - Wed. LAX to MUC
Oct. 20 - Thurs - Arrive in Munich 12:30pm, head straight for the Delivery Center, pick up car, drive 90 miles south to the Castles/Fussen, stay overnite in Fussen.
Oct. 21- Fri - Head for Venice, thru Innsbruck via the Brenner Pass. Leave right after b-fast, maybe earlier. Get to Venice early afternoon. Need Hotel recommendations.
Oct. 22 - Sat - VENICE
Oct. 23 - Sun - Head for Rome - Need Hotel recommendations
Oct. 24 - Mon - ROME
Oct. 25 - Tues - ROME/ Florence in the afternoon Stay overnite in Florence. What's in Florence? Should we stay 2 nites?
Oct. 26 - Wed - Head to Nice, pass by Pisa. Stay overnight in Nice. Need Hotel
Oct. 27 - Thurs - Head to PARIS, try dropping off car in the afternoon.
Oct. 28 - Fri. - PARIS
Oct. 29 - Sat - PARIS
Oct. 30 - Sun - PARIS - 3:30pm flt back to LAX

Thoughts? Should we skip Paris and just stick to Italy then back to Munich for the dropoff? Any other issues I am forgetting?

What is your Venice budget, and would you like to drive to the hotel versus using the big garage outside the city?

The drive is AMAZING, this is what BMW's were made for. I was relatively exhausted when we got to our destination in Italy though, so leave as early as you can in the morning. That drive is what BMW's are made for.

Try using Google Earth to scope out the route, its very cool.

No preferrence really on garages. Heard about the Lido island trick so interested in that. Budget for hotels is about 100 euros per nite. More if the room can be shared between two couples.

Stayed in Rome at the Hotel Nazionale. Fantastic Hotel and staff, Great location. Within easy walks of the Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Piazza Venezia and Colosseo. Probably 250-300 Euro but well worth for the location. Florence IMO is definately 2 days. Duomo, Uffizzi (birth of venus), Accademi (David). Check out Ristorante Leo, fantastic arrabiate! Hotel Plaza Lucchesi another very fine Hotel on the river and within walking distance to all of attractions above, and the Ponte Vecchio!

That's way too much driving and too little time to enjoy each city. You will be exhausted and won't see much IMO. Why not do northern and central Italy and skip Rome and Paris for some other time. Ease yourself into Italy little by little and see how different its regions are but how they flow into each other.
I would cross the Alps and check out Trentino Alto Adige because it is a great overspill of Austrian/Tirolian culture done in Italian way. Overnight in Trento. Check out Lago di Garda. IMO it's more interesting and less touristy than Como. This region has one of the world's best white wines. Then head for Venice, check out Chioggia. venice is really 1 day affair to be honest. It's touristy. Then head down through Emilia-Romagna (stop in Bologna if you can - nice city, very oppulent with rich cooking) to Tuscany. This is where I would spend most of your stay. There is so much to see. Base yourself in Florence or just outside (like Fiesole) so that you can take public transportation to the city. Florence itself has a lot even though its a much more compact city than say Rome. You will need at the very least 3 days for Florence itself. Then there is so much to explore around Florence. Check out the Chianti region - driving is amazing (that's where Roundel tested ZHP when it first came out). Siena, Cortona and San Giminiano are must cities to see.

I know you want to check a lot of things on your list - I've been there done that sort of thing but your itinerary sounds more like - I have 1 week to see the States so I will go to Northern and Southern CA, see NY and DC, then Florida and maybe Texas and than a quick one day trip to Alaska and maybe Chicago on my way back, oh and there's the whole New England - half a day for that!
You will be in Europe again (that's what ED is for!) and explore another piece of it.
