Hotels reservations on Romantic Road: YEY or NAY

Gang:

I ‘m planning an ED trip for mid October. My wife and I want to see the Romantic Road. My question is whether or not I need to make hotel reservations in advance. I was told that there are few tourists in October and hotels are mostly empty.

Thanks.

I would say no. However, if you want to stay at unique places (e.g., you found a castle that had been converted into a hotel - no I do not know of such a thing near Rothenburg, sorry - with only four rooms) then you should probably arrange reservations in advance.

Also, if you are planning to stay in medium to larger cities, go online and look at the tourist bureau for that city - they will alert you if there are any conferences planned. Large conferences target large cities, but smaller ones can wind up in smaller and more quaint locales (Wurzburg, Heidelberg, etc.) that you might otherwuse would assume would have zillions of empty hotel rooms in October. Spring and fall are popular times for all sorts of conferences. Easy info to look up and it may save you a surprise.

Having said that, I hardly ever make hotel reservations on automobile trips in the US or Europe. For my wife and I, much of the fun of having an automobile is the ability to change our itinerary at the last minute. It almost bit us on the ass over Christmas break on the Cote d'Azur enroute to Spain in 1981 - the hotels were CLOSED for the most part - nobody goes to the Cote d'Azur at that time of year...except two young Americans cramming as much Euro-travel as possible while living in Europe Lordy, lordy, the adventures we had!

In Oct you will probably be OK. Some of the gasthous will be closed, but many still open. Rick Steves guidebooks have some great finds as to locations, great things to see and great recommendations on places to stay. YOu can get them from most bookstores and Amazon. We have been over here for 2 years and have an entire library of his books. Great stuff! have fun

We went in October for our honeyoon and are returning for ED this October. I would recommend reservations, we couldn't get into some of the top places that were recommended to us, so I think tht there is still demand. Please PM me if you want more info on where we stayed. Good Luck!
