Hi Guys,
I am planning to make a day trip to Rothenburg from Munich via the romantic road. I am thinking pick up the car in the morning and head to Rothenburg right after that. I will come back to Munich for the night. How long is the drive from Munich to Rothenburg? I remembered that someone says it's around 2 hours. Do you guys think this is reasonable plan or not?

First, good luck finding the Romantic Road...I guess the group of guys I was with were doofuses but were never really sure about the road.
However, we had fun cutting across small roads and such and had a great time working our way to Rothenberg. I think even using the autobahn, you won't get there in 2 hours...3 is closer I think. You should plan to stay in the walled city for the night. There are several hotels and restaurants within the walls.
It is a very cool place...spend some time there if you can.

-Yukon | Yes, it can be done, but I didn't find the Romantic Road neccesarily romantic the whole way. Many parts were, of course, but it passes through the light industrial/urban areas and the center of several small towns. Lots of truck traffic too. Why not take the Autobahn in one direction and the Romantic Road the other? Also, Rothenburg is worth staying in overnight if you can....it's a wholly different place after all those tour busses pull out.

I did exactly what you're thinking last week. Arrived at BMW 7:30. Out of there before 9:00. Punched in Rothenburg ODT on the Nav and went straight there. Took just under 2 hrs to get there. Got back to Munich around 5:00 as I recall.

Did you take the Autobahn to/from Rothenburg or stay on the Romantic Road? Thanks!
