Munich to Paris in 2,100 miles

We got back from our ED trip about a week and a half ago, part of our schedule was unplanned, this is what we wound up doing:

Munich 6/22 - 6/23 Picked up the car at the ED center -- unfortunately did not get Bernard. Delivery experience could have been better, but that wasn't any fault of the center, we had a more than average amount of turbulance near the end of our LAX to MUC flight, and my daughter had some airsick issues... that hit right about the time the guy came with the delivery papers, so my husband was going back and forth between the meeting room with the guy doing the delivery, and the WC helping my daughter. Munich was great, it was my first time there; stayed at the Marriott. Walked around the downtown/Marienplatz area, visited the Hofbrouhous, the Englisher Garten.

6/24 - 6/26 Visited relatives near Heidelburg, Mannheim. Mostly just spent time visiting various uncles, cousins, didn't get to see any sights around here, although one uncle took us on the train up to a festival and parade, Hessen tage, I think it was, in Weilburg. Cool town.

6/27 Salzburg. Beautiful town, I wish we'd had more time to spend here.
6/28 St. Moritz. Pretty, but not anyplace I expect to ever be again, it was just on the way to where we were going, southern France.
6/29 Milan. Also not someplace I will likely ever be again. Downtown was cool, but getting out of town was a traffic nightmare. Here's where I most wished to have gotten a NAV system. Another frustration here was that our ATM card wouldn't work in any of the banks we tried.
6/30 - 7/1 Nice. Spent two nights here, drove over to Monte Carlo for lunch, beautiful drive. Spent an afternoon on the hotel's rocky beach.
7/2 Avignon. Great area. Like Munich and Salzburg, I wish we could have spent more time here.
7/3 Dijon. Pretty, there was a festival going on here the night we were there.
7/4 Versailles. The one big sight we missed on our last trip to Paris, toured the gardens the evening we got there, as it was Monday and the palace was closed. Did a short tour of that the next day. Spectacular gardens.
7/5 Paris. Drove from Versaille to the CDG airport where the dropoff point was. Missed the car wash on the way in (when we called 4 days in advance of the dropoff, they guy at ttroissy said we should wash the car before dropping it off, there was a place down the street from the airport) but the guy said it was not too bad. The car was dropped off with 2,121 miles on it. It had 8 when we left Munich. There were a couple of minor scratches to either side of the front bumper where we'd clipped a couple of lane markers that were sticking up. These were noted on the dropoff sheet. Can we expect that these will be fixed when we take re-delivery?

Spent the next 9 days in Paris getting around on the Metro, seeing the usual sights.

7/14 Travel day back to San Diego. Arrived after midnight. Flew from Paris to MUC, MUC to Chicago and Chicago to SAN. We had a tight connection in MUC, only about a half hour in the first place, and the first flight was a bit on the late side. We were running from one end of the terminal to the other for passport control, then back again to the departing gate. When we were going through security there, they were riffling through my one carryon case, which had reading material, magazines, CDs, paperwork with hotel info, directions, etc, and the BMW folder which we got upon payment for the car which contains the info on delivery, clock, maps -- they went through it about 3 times until they came to the BMW folder and the clock -- the clock was what they were looking for, must have looked suspicous on the xray. We were just anxious because they'd already made the final boarding call for our flight. Then more questions, where did you travel, where did you pack your bags, etc, normal security questions. Fortunately, we were able to make our flight.

A great trip. Many's the time, though, I did wish we were/felt rich enough to get the NAV, as so many have recommended. But we made it through with our Fodor's map book, and the help of a couple of people we stopped in Milan, which was the hardest place to find our way in (or rather, out of). Hopefully by the next time we take such a trip the NAV technology will have come down in price enough, is more mainstream, that it'll be an easy choice to get.

Below pics are car at pickup, at an uncle's house, on the drive from Nice to Monte Carlo, and at dropoff. Unfortunately, I don't have any shots as spectacular as some I've seen here.

I'm jealous!

Wonderful places all - the stops brought immediate flashbacks - thanks for the memories!!! Did you get to see the Pont du Gard (just west of Avignon)?

Heh, this is why people should take public trans. Even with Nav, you would've regretted. I sure have in Como. After that experience, I took a train from Varena to Milan for a daytrip and then took Ciao Milano tram around city. Great sights, great food, and great memory overall.

I'm also glad I didn't skip Avignon despite the trip cut short due to the car damage. It was one big party town with performers all over the world for July festival. I just wish I could've stayed overnight and see some theater performances.

No, we pretty much stayed within Avignon's walls... but that definitely would be on my list to go see if we had another day or two, along with Nimes and Arles. I'd picked up a little booklet about the area from the "Palace of the Popes" there, both those towns look to have lots of old Roman structures, amphitheatre, etc. Pont du Gard was also covered.

One thing I brought along in my carryon was a printout of this site, a listing of "Secret hotels of Provence", found through Budget Travel's site: http://www.budgettravelonline.com/bt...060400779.html . Didn't make use of it this time though, just stayed in the Mercure hotel in Avignon. I can see a future trip focused more on southern France, and also Barcelona, northern Spain. (Below pic is from Avignon, taken from a walk out onto a very old bridge http://www.waw.com/regard/anglais/theme2/avignon.html )

We did take public transport into the city center in Milan, our hotel was near the main train station there, we had the car parked near the hotel. We drove south toward Milan along the east side of Lake Como, I would have liked to have stoped at Varena after seeing pics of it here (and perhaps stayed there that night), but missed the initial turnoff that would have taken us there, after that it was mostly tunnels; others in my family were wanting to stay in a larger city at that point, so Milan it was.

Yeah, you could've definitely used a nav there. I can't imagine doing ED without one. I plunked down $2k for it just for ED, and I don't regret it.
