Time Frame for ED?
What's the time frame that you all have been working with? I figure that since I'm ordering a car from the factory (dealer doesn't have what I want), I'm going to have to wait anyway, so I might as well just go with ED.
However, I'm curious as to how long it has taken for you all from date of order with the dealer to date of delivery. For example, if I walked into a dealer tomorrow, signed all of the papers, etc. for ED, approximately when would I be looking at a Munich pickup? After that, how long should I expect to wait for US delivery (West Coast -- Seattle)?
Is custom ordering basically on the same timetable as ED? That is, if I went in tomorrow and ordered two cars, one needing to be factory ordered and one ED, would the ED arrive about a week after the other car (the extra week for the 2-3 days I'd have the car in Munich)?
Thanks! Matt

It seems to me that you are kind of missing the point. An ED trip can be the vacation of a life time. Driving in Europe is amazing. There is so much to see. My trip was 12 days long and it killed me how short it seemed. If you are going to do it, do it right. Take at least a week.

Car on order as of 7/15, 7/17 scheduled for production, 7/20 in production with copletion of 7/27. Pickup in Munich scheduled for 8/29. So it will be sitting there for a month waiting. 10 days with the car and then 3-4 weeks on the ship to NY. I figure early October at best. So the time frame is about 3 months total. It would be quicker to just order the car if your dealer is able to with their allocation. The main reason I went with the ED is the oportunity to see Europe from behind the wheel of my new BMW! Many people here have done it and it seems to be one of the greatest experiences one can have, I can't wait! Good luck with your decision and no matter you will have a great car!

There is a time period where the car is built and waiting for you in Munich that does not correspond to ordering a car. So you order your cars at the same time, they can be built at the same time, but your ED pickup date will be say 2 months from when you order. (they ask for 3 months actually, and you can sometimes squeeze it down to six weeks, but two months is doable). So, after you order, your cars are built maybe a month later... then the shipping process starts for the ordered car, while the waiting for you in Munich starts for the ED car.
You arrive a month later, and keep the car for a week say. Then your ED shipping process starts. So, all in all, you loose six weeks to 2.5/3 months of getting the car here. BUT you had a week or two with it on the Autobahn, with free insurance and roadside assitance, great food, great roads and memoroable experiences, so that's the "trade-off"

I graduated from college May 15th and I backpacked through Europe for a month, so I've kind of just been there and done that. Moreover, I started work 2 weeks ago, so I can't just up and take off 2 weeks of work within a few months of starting, especially since I'm going to want to take some time off for Thanksgiving/X-Mas. I just figured that since I'd have to wait to custom order anyway, I might as well just save the $4k-$5k and do ED.

Note, howver, that you have to pay in full about 2 months before you actually get it in the US, whereas, for an ordered car, you pay when you get the car. Add trip cost/time to that, it probably is not worth if saving is our primary motivation.
