Well, I am on my way. Confirmed for pickup date of Friday, Sept. 30th. Have just started thinking about travel route - unfortunately will only be able to stay 5 days. Current thinking goes something like... arrive Munich Friday morning and go directly to pick up car. 'Maybe' look around Munich, but most likely get away from the crowds and head to Fussen, then Salzburg. From Salzburg go see Bad Ischl and Hallstatt. From there maybe to Lienz then to Innsbruck and back to Munich. Quick trip, so can't get too far from Munich and really want to see some of the romantic countryside. I will 'have' to do a little bit of Autobahn, but prefer to mostly take the scenic routes. Excited now!!!  I plan on going to the bookstore this weekend to find a few books that I've seen recommended to plan road route and lodging. | | Reply » Date Confirmed |

I plan on going to the bookstore this weekend to find a few books that I've seen recommended to plan road route and lodging. | Sounds like a nice itinerary. Keep in mind you can drive (from Munich) as far south as Italy over the Brenner Paß and back to Munich in one day with plenty of time to see the scenery. You can also drive from Munich to Lindau, briefly into Switzerland than back through Austria to Munich - all in one day. Nothing wrong with your itinerary - just throwing out other trips which don't take you far from Munich.
When you say you are staying 5 days, I take it you mean four nights?
Advice in seeing Munich. Leave car at hotel and take U-bahn into the City Center. If you want me to write up a 3-4 hour "tour" of the city, let me know.

Thanks Jonathan, I'll take all the suggestions I can get at this point
I kept it short to account for slow driving on some roads, watching the scenery, and hoping to find interesting places to just stop and look around. But if I can get in more, I'd love to hear about other great places to see. My main goals are to experience some of the local flavor, great scenery, and not feel too rushed. Of course I'm sure I will be tempted with at least a little 'rush' on some of the open road. Other than this, nothing is finalized yet.
