 Currency Exchange

What are people currently getting in the European marketplace recently for the US dollar? Does anyone want to share their tips on where they prefer to go (airport, bank, etc.) to maximize return and minimize fees when doing their currency exchange? Thanks.

Yahoo! currently is quoting $1.00USD : 0.8307€ / 1.00€ : $1.2039USD

Hi RedStripe, I prefer using the ATM Machine at the airport in Munich for a little cash, then I find a DB and get the major chunk of cash from their ATM, I don't get charged a fee when I use their ATM for some reason.

On a side note, did you ever get your NAV DVD rental?

Take some cash from the bank or airport. But try to use your credit card most of the time. THat gives you the best rate (IMO) at that time and no fees.

I agree about using your credit card for purchases. I would also recommend using your ATM card for cash. That's my first stop at the airport for both times I've been in Germany the past couple of months. Bank of America doesn't charge bank fees on the ATMs either. Well... they tried, and we called and had the charges removed.

Get all your cash once from an ATM, and then use the credit/debit card whenever you can. (I'm proud to say that I was left with 3 cents when I left Germany, which I donated for charity on the plane.) Oh, and check with your credit card companies and use the one with the lowest foreign transaction charge (0 to 3%).

We used both credit cards and ATM card for cash -- Wells Fargo, knew there'd be a fee for the "Non - WF ATM" useage, found it to be $5 per w/d when we got back home. How did you talk B of A into removing the charges?

What was discnoncerting during our trip were the couple of places our ATM card would not work, even though the machines had a Cirrus designation, one of the labels on the back of our cards. The first place this happened was at the main train station in Frankfurt, the second place was in Milan Italy -- don't know the reason in either place, our cards worked at other banks in Munich, Moerlenbach in Germany, and any place we tried in France. It was a little anxiety causing, because you don't know whether something has happened to your access, your account, don't know whether you'll be without Euros for the rest of the trip. The banks we tried in Milan seemed to be major banks in that country, I wonder if there is something lacking in the financial infrastructure there? Anyway, once we got to Nice, all was well as far as accessing cash went.
