It's safer than driving from SF to LA I tell you that.

i was just in milan, florence and lake como. the road conditions are:

1) autostrada - just ask good as autobahn. have to pay to drive there
2) local roads - better then roads we have here in San Francisco Bay Area

For city driving you have to switch into "video game" mode - learn to share 3 lanes with 3 other cars and 4 scooters

Streets in Italy are not wide. There were times when i had an inch or two on each side of my 750 when i drove through them. But its fun if you are young: windows down, music up and pedal to the metal Info on my trip is here:

Superstrada are excellent, but forget driving or parking around the city. That's just too stressful in any city that you are not familiar wth, even with nav. I'd park the car at the hotel and use public trans. Both cities have excellent public trans, and articulated buses in Rome are fun to ride.

Rome is a traffic free-for-all. I wouldn't recommend driving there if you can avoid it. I would look for a safe, covered place to park out of the fray, and take public transportation into the city. Glad I didn't have to worry about a vehicle (brand new one at that) when I was in Rome...
