I’m looking for a detailed travel guide with good coverage of popular German routes and possible road itineraries. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Rick Steves' Germany and Austria, and Frommer's Germany's best-loved driving tours..... I recently purchased these for my aniticapted ED in August and they have been very helpful! The www.viamichelin.com (via michelin tires) is an AWESOME mapping program and helps you figure route times and distance!
Good luck. Also search around this forum there are a lot of good posts and itineraries!!

I just got Driving around bavaria and the austrian tyrol, haven't read it yet.

The last Michelin Green Guide for Germany is so out of date it has DM instead of Euros. But, it has gread coverage of a few selected itineraries for drives, so it might be worth tracking it down. ...or, just take me along. I have made six trips to Germany in the last five years and can give you lots of personal insights! 
Seriously...do have a fax? I could try to fax the pages with the suggested driving routes.
