ED During Oktoberfest - Am I crazy?

I scheduled my delivery date around the expiration of the lease on my current M3 with a month buffer for redelivery. Luck would have it that my confirmed delivery date is smack in the middle of Oktoberfest. We are arriving in Munich on 9/29 and immediately picking up my new 330.

I've begun to look at Hotels in Munich, and as expected, rates are sky high and availability is limited. I am afraid that Munich is going to be crazy busy. Crowds don't bother me but I am really looking forward to getting in some open cruising on the Autobahn. I am considering picking up the car and immediately getting out of Munich. Am I overracting? Will Munich be as busy as I expect? Any suggestions on where we should go for a few days (we will need to return to Munich on 10/2 to drop of at Harms and make our flight)? Stuttgart? Salzburg? Frankfurt?

I just got back from an ED. I stayed with a friend in Stuttgart and with all due respects to Stuttgart you can't really compare it to Munich. Munich is going to be a lot of fun during Oktoberfest....treat yourself to 2 nights there....park the car at the hotel...and take the UBahn to get around.....I think it sounds like one of those "got to do it once before I die" kind of experiences.

Salzburg is probably your best bet of the cities you mentioned.....try driving to Salzburg and looping through Austria via Innsbruck and back up into Bavaria....the scenery is breathtaking....the drive will be fun. Get a good travel book (Fodors/Rick Steves).

We went to Oktoberfest last year and stayed 1 hour south of Munich on the Tegernsee in Bad Wiessee (Mappoint.com). It is also between Salzburg and Innsbrook. Tegernsee has a large lake with health spas and B&Bs around it. There is a tour company in the middle of town that does bus trips to Oktoberfest (easier than driving and figuring out the train). We are going back this year when I get my ED in August.

My last ED Pick-up was at the end of Oktoberfest. http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...ht=Oktoberfest

From my experince I can tell you that if you want to check out Oktoberfest, then STAY in MUNICH and pay the prevailing rate. IMHO, I think its worth to check out if you are an out going person and loves bier as I do As a rule of thumb the further you stay the cheaper the hotel rate, but believe me, you are better off staying close by and enjoy the day (and get around the city in U-bahn).

I've stayed at Hotel Jedermann many times and they are excellent for attending O'fest (walking distance) Jedermann is a typical German Pension and run by the family and rooms are ALWAYS clean.

If you are going to be picking your new car during o'fest , I would strongly recommend you stay at least 1 day to check out the fest. Not many people can claim that been to the O'fest (the real one, not the cheesy wannabe at your local town-hall ) and even fewer can say they also picked up their new car enroute to O'fest.

Just my take,

beewang
