Accepting ED (Picking up car) Question

When you pick up your car in Munich, is that the same as receiving your car from a dealer in the US? Do you do a test drive? Do you need to check everything out thoroughly? Or, do you do that upon receipt from your dealer in the US? Thanks in advance

Once you pick up the car in Munich it is yours, you own it. So do as you would when picking up a brand new car from your local dealer. (Ie: get in and drive) (Did you forget you will still have a 4 year warrantee?)

I've seen posts here in the past (sort of like this one) where people say should I 'check it out thoroughly' and they usually are thinking like it's some used POS, forgetting entirely its a new car. Did you want to put it up on a rack, run some diagnostics, etc? How about a compression check before you sign the papers! Or perhaps you can find a local independent mechanic and he can do the thorough inspection for you? I'm 100% sure that his evaluation will be... "er...ah... absolutely EVERTHING seems to be like new".

Uhh, guys, in fairness to Mr. KMonster, there are numerous links and references on these boards to Jerry's Pickup Checklist posted over on the X3/X5World boards, so I read his post in the light of "is this something I should do at the ED center" or is it something I should do at re-delivery or what". I think he was just asking if this was appropriate or not.

I was kinda curious about that myself, but then knowing the German culture, I immediately realized they would be insulted if I ran through Jerry's list with a new car fresh from the factory that they were taking the time to introduce me to personally like a mother might introiduce me to her daughter ...and under their breath they would mutter "bloede Ami".

The question was innocent enough, but I can't imagine doing this with a "new" car that I purchased direct from the factory even at a US dealer. Maybe with a new car off the lot, and obviously with a used car.

Remember, if there are any problems with the car (and there may be), there's warranty coverage and an opportunity to have it corrected stateside. And if it's a serious problem, like you can't drive it off the lot . . . well, you'll know that in time.

A full inspection and test drive would likely be somewhat "insulting", but, from my own experience, you should still check out the car a bit.
During the delivery process in Munich, I noticed my NAV screen was scratched and a piece of trim not attached properly. I wrote on the delivery paper (the one that says you accept the car), that I was taking provisionnal delivery but that 2 things needed to be fixed. It probably had no legal value, but I wanted to make sure my dealer or BMWNA wouldn't say I scratched the screen. When I came back, the dealer fixed it (oddly enough, the VPC did nothing about it)
