 Best Itinerary For Short Stay

If I have a Friday a.m. arrival and car pickup, and Monday p.m. departure (might possibly be able to extend for one day) and did not want to spend the time in Munich, what would be most worthwhile to try and see - hopefully some combination of scenery, great drive and historic sites. Would that be reasonable enough time for Prague or Florence?

Whew! Whirlwind!

There have been a few threads in this forum that talk about short itineraries. Scroll down a bit. Here is a recent thread and here is another.

Munich is wonderfully situated. When I lived there my wife and I took trips (ausfluege) frequently on weekends. You can drive in any direction for almost any distance and find wonderful and magical things that meet your combination of scenery, great drive and historic sites. You can stay in Munich and see wonderful and magical things (maybe not so great a driving experience in Munich!). I cannot predict what wonderful and magical things interest you, so it is hard to tell you which direction to go! The Deutsche Alpenstrasse will take you through the Bavarian Alps from the Bodensee (Lake Constance) on the west past the castles of King Ludwig on to the Austrian border on the east. Twisty mountain roads, lakes, salt mines, mountain scenery. The Romantische Strasse will take you north and west from the castles of King Ludwig on the south across the Danube to medieval towns of Noerdlingen, Dinkelsbuehl, Rothenburg and Wurzbug. And like the U.S., Germany has lots and lots of scenic roads all laid out and marked. You do not have enough time to drive any from end to end. But you can always hop on at any point and drive until you have to turn around and come back!

It's going to take you the better part of a day to drive to Florence or Prague...even hauling a** on the 'bahn. I wouldn't recommend it...unless hauling a** on the 'bahn is all you want to do! Reminds me of the overnight runs we used to make to Pat O'Brian's in New Orleans for Hurricanes from Houston when I was a college student.

Get a good guide book to Germany, Austria, Switzerland...read what's there and see what tickle's your fancy. Focus on areas close to Munich - you'll have more time to see those.

Now if you're talking an open-jaw trip where you pick up in Munich and drop off somewhere else, then that's a whole different plan...

Thanks, Liverman.

I hadn't given it much thought, but open jaw might be the way to go, as long as the airlines rates aren't exhorbitant for that. Another consideration would be how the car is transported from the drop off city - wouldn't be crazy about it being driven any distance. Time to start looking into it.

From any EH Harms drop-off city (except drop-off points in Italy), the car will be trucked to the port.

You could drive it to one of the ports (like Bremerhaven, Antwerp, Amsterdam) and fly back from there.

Thanks, ger3sf. BTW, I'll be driving the CA coast with family in August (unfortunately, NOT with a BMW). Where did you take the coastal picture showing next to your name on posts?

Actually, the road is not on the coast ... the light area in the background is downtown San Francisco and SF Bay. The picture was taken from top of Twin Peaks (looking east) which is the highest point of the city. I live close to where this shot was taken, and Twin Peaks Blvd is a cool road to zip around (when there's no traffic, of course ).
