Roof rack and luggage box
Does anyone have experience shipping back from Europe a roof rack and luggage box? I confirmed today with the folks at European Delivery that I would have no trouble purchasing and installing that accessory while in Munich, but that I would be responsible for removing and shipping it back to the States. I have an inquiry in to the Harms office in Antwerp asking whether they would handle the shipping for a fee. If not, I would need to box it up and send it back.
I suspect that the cost and aggravation of the process is not worth the extra storage space, but if anyone has ever tried this I would be very interested in hearing your thoughts.
As always, thanks for the assistance.

You are buying a 545 w/ that big a$$ CB Trunk "butt"
Humor me here... what's the rack for??!

The shipping part is a not the big issue; the import customs in the US is however. BMW always recomends takeing anything off the car that is not installed by the factory.

With some degree of relief, however, I'm quickly concluding that the hassle of packing and shipping the gear back to the States is not worth the benefit.

Needless to say the confusion of the dealership when I asked for the rack. I had to point to the accessories brochure since I do not speak german at all. It was extremely expensive, but I had to do it since my wife doesn't know how to pack lightly I would either take a printed picture of the contraption or learn how to say roof rack in german Also don't forget to keep the original boxes if you decide to ship it, finding a box wasn't easy either. Buy at the closest gas station, plastic rope or take it with you, since at the hotels they usually don't have anything strong enough. To finish a long story short, I drove all over Eastern Europe with the thing, and apart from having to unload and reload at hotels I had no issues. Of course my car looked ugly, but these are the perks of marital bliss ...When I dropped off the car, I asked Mr. Berhrens (Forgive me if I am spelling it wrong) for advise, and he said that it should be no problem to ship it with the car. However Keith, at BMW Santa Barbara, mentioned that there is no certainty that it will come with the car. What do you think Bee ? Since I am still waiting for it, I cannot tell you for certain. I just didn't want to deal with the struggle of taking it back in the plane with us or shipping it (very expensive from Germany according to UPS and FedEx, but I didn't try the regular Post Office No time)...At this point for me, it is a casualty of war...it served its purpose and I do not expect to get it back. But if it comes, I'll sale it or store it in my garage. I do not want to drive my new E90 baby around with that thing on top It 's just not suave Just my two cents

I also agree w/ Keith, that you just kissed that roof rack good bye. There is a remote chance that they will miss it when the car comes thru Custom and VPC. It is possible but not probable. You are living in the era of post 9-11.
cheers,
