Traveling to Prague
My wife and I have been trying to come up with an interesting trip with the car to some place we have not visited. We got excited about the idea of going to Prague, but some friends in Germany indicate that a new BMW may be liable to being stolen.
Anybody here has opinions on this matter? Also, does the ED default insurance for the European duration cover such situations?

I would suggest that you utilize the underground parking garages or guarded parking lots instead of parking on the street. Also, at night it would be best if you had your car in a garage.
I visit Prague regularly as we have built a house there. In the past 10+ years, we have never had a car stolen. Granted, we haven't always had "steal worthy" cars but when you see some of the vehicles people are driving over there, you will feel more at ease. There are still a lot of Skodas and Trabants but you will be amazed at how many people are driving BMW, Mercedes, Porche, Ferrari and so on. I am still amazed every time I visit.
There is so much history and so many things to see in Prague that in my opinion it would be a mistake not to see it if you have the opportunity. Prices are still very reasonable compared to the rest of Europe and your Dollar will go farther than it will in Germany.
Sorry I can't help you with the ED insurance but I would assume that it would be covered. Prague is not as high risk as it used to be. A few years ago it was difficult to rent a car in Germany and drive it across the border into the Czech Republic. Now it is not difficult at all.
Please let us know what you decide.

Other than dealing with a lot of people who wanted to "change money," the city was extremely safe and almost functioning, still, as a communist entity.
| | Reply » Traveling to Prague | I visited friends in Prague about a month ago during my ED with no problems whatsoever. I was driving my brand spanking new E90, but there were more expensive and regal cars out there that I thought, so I wouldn't worry about taking yours. Granted I stayed at the Hilton and the car was in an underground secure parking, but nevertheless there were no issues. Besides I woudn't drive in Prague if I were you, since public transportation gets you practically everywhere and driving in Prague isn't easy, poor signs, and lots of cars (We didn't have the nav system!) I got acquainted with the city thanks to a tour and our friends' advise. However, on the route from Regensberger to Prague, expect a few delays ( 7 hours) as the road to the border between Germany and Czech is merely a two way street packed with trucks, buses and cars (Not a pretty sight!). At the border, purchase a Vignette (10 Euros if I recall well) for your stay ( Just in case that the cops stop you) and try to get some crowns, since euros are still not widely accepted in Czech. Once you have passed the Border, it is smooth sailing until you reach Prague. Be careful at this point, since Prague has many small cities around and you could get lost. Buy a good map, or make use of the nav system if you have it. If you need more info PM me and I can give you the route that we took. Good luck and enjoy your ultimate driving machine!!!

I stayed at the Andel's hotel in the business district, parked the car in an indoor garage, and forgot about it for 4 days. I recommend highly this hotel, since you park in the outside of the old town and do not have to drive through narrow streets if you walk and use cabs and public transportation. Also, at least if you come through Pilsen, roads are in great shape, desolate, and without speed limits. If you have a choice, get gas after crossing the border in the Czech Republic, which is about 25% cheaper than in Germany.

I stay in the hotel Bishop House right next of St. Charles bridge about 10 to 15 minutes walking, Do not park your car in the streets of Prague or the police will put some kind of lock in your tyres that wil stop to going anywhere until you pay the ticket. and also it will make very dificult to steale.
Go and enjoy it's a really beatifull city, and perhaps the best beer of europe is right there.
