 Potential ED Program changes

I heard it from a very reliable source that BMW is thinking of changing the ED program as follows:

Less discount
More promotion of the German tourist experience

What I gathered is that they are noticing that more and more people are coming in just to pick up the cars and they don't stay very long. I couldn't press for too much info but it sounds like they will offer hotel rooms in Germany in exchange for lower discounts. Nothing has been decided yet.

So let's discourage those quick pickups.....yeah right I know that's impossible.

Hmm. That would be too bad, although I guess it depends on how much less the discount is.

I do find it odd that they care about the tourist experience, unless there's some subsidy program from Germany/Munich that no one knows about.

Of course, they could also solve the problem by having a minimum "keep" period before drop off (with a penalty of some sort, if needed). For example, you can't drop off less than 5 days after pickup. If you do, you have to pay $1000 (or something). I doubt this would be too hard to administer, because they could always check later.

I have not heard this but they should be careful...

For me ED was the only realistic way I could afford what I wanted (well almost - I guess I could have stretched myself a little).

I stayed with a friend, I would not have used a hotel anyway.

What is in BMW's interest in promoting hotels etc. though? How would they make $$ from it?

I've said this all along... really bad for us, that people go just to save the money. If it keeps happening I do believe the program is doomed. I'm an M3 guy, so I get to claim to be an ED purist since we get no discount now... we are only into it for the best reasons. Otherwise... you guys better prepare yourselfs to go just for the merits of driving in Europe because these guys that just go and drop-off are going to take your discounts from you!

Here is a thread of interest: Doesn't even want to drive to the drop-off location!

I also agree,
and since I also got an M3 , no discounts for me either.
I did it because picking up the M in Germany was priceless, not to mention driving in Nurburgring.

I cannot understand how some one would go all the way to Germany, pick up his/her car
and return it in one day !

I second that. It defies the whole purpose of ED. I like your idea of a required minimum time in EU. This was my first ED, & we stayed about 2 weeks. If the purpose is to save money, ED is actually more expensive; as the vacation costs more than you save. But, the experience is priceless. I am hooked. I am now thinking of a way to do another ED next year.
When you add everything up it makes little sense at present to do ED just to save money. Especially if you place any value on your time. By the time you pay for the flight, hotels and other expenses, factor in the value of the time lost traveling, the time spent waiting for redelivery to the US, the extra risk of damage and possible extra wait at the VDC, there's very little saved money relative to a US delivery. Increasing the cost might make it difficult for a lot of people to justify ED who honestly want the experience of picking up their car and sightseeing with it in Germany.

Also, any required minimum time should be pretty brief. 3 or 4 days should be sufficient when you tally the cost of gas in Europe, hotels, food, etc. I am planning on an August ED but I'm probably going to have to squeeze it in 5 days max because of family commitments and work requirements. I would love it to be two weeks (or more!) but this just isn't possible at this time. However, I relish the thought of getting my new 330i in Munich and experiencing Germany (and maybe Switzerland) this way.
