ED, with a kid...lots of questions
On July 14 we'll be picking up our 330ci ZHP in Munich, and I am looking for some suggestions for where to go and where to stay. I have read some of the suggestion on this forum, but none really match what I am looking for.
I'll be traveling with my wife (her car) and my 9 year old daughter which means that she overdoses on big cities, churches and castles very quickly. Something kid oriented every day would be great.
Here is what I have in mind:
Synopsis: Pick up car, visit Muenchen, factory tour, drive around southern Bavaria, possibly venture through N Austria or CH, and then shoot on up to Antwerp. The idea is to wear the car in on the twisty windy roads before hitting the autobahn (and be stuck in the returning vacation traffic).
Details: o Stay in Munich 1 night. Hotel choices: The Meridian or King's Hotel: favorable reviews, lousy neighborhood.
o BMW factory tour: How long does it take, and how far is it (are they near the pick up center? (i.e., can it be done if I start the tour after 3 pm?) Next day?
o Castles: Is Neuschwanstein still terribly congested? Is there a way just to see it from the outside w/o being stuck in traffic for hours?
o Ultimately we'd like to drive the car through picturesque landscapes, Bavaria, the Alps on twisty windy roads (e.g., http://www.grossglockner.at/) and stay in smaller towns. Most suggestions have been for bigger cities. Berchtesgaden? Others?
o Any suggestions for good, clean (with A/C) hotel chains along the Autobahns? They are expecting another heat wave in July.
o Has anyone visited the salt mines near Salzburg and remember where they are or what they are called? I did it when I was little and it was awesome.
o Jungfraujoch: How bad are the crowds this time of the year? Can you make reservations? This would be great fun.
Thanks. Jan

http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...highlight=kids | Thanks for the tip, and yes, I have searched and read just about all the messages so far that mention ED. My questions remain, small towns, how buzy is Neuschwanstein, etc.
Thanks.

Thanks. | You can reserve tickets for a specific time for Neuschwanstein, so if you like, and if you time it properly, you could do Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau in a few hours, with no waiting. They move you through Neuschwanstein pretty quickly - what takes a little time is if you walk (hike) instead of taking the shuttle. If you are staying overnight, the hotel can arrange everything for you.

To the original poster: don't stress about it too much. It's like travelling with kids anywhere in the US. Try staying more centrally in cities so you don't have to walk to far with kids or even take public transit. Don't plan too long drives. You'll be fine. Just enjoy it. It all seems more stressful than it is.
