Reunited, and it feels so good!

5 weeks to the day from dropoff, my wife was able to pick up her Bluewater/Black X3 3.0 at lunchtime today. Thanks to the folks at Nalley BMW (forum sponsor) in Decatur for another wonderful sales experience.

I'm still working on the triplog and picture gallery. Anyone know if Photoshop album has an API I can hook into to get captions and tags?

Congrats! 5 weeks is cool, east coast port. Are you looking to write some kind of program so you can tap into the API - Application Program Interface of Photoshop. What language will you be writing in?

Of couse if you don't want to write code for this perhaps you can use one of the many tools out there that already do this.

I used Arles to create the photo galleries with captions for my write-up, and frontpage to create a simple overview / menu page:

This is the main gallery created with Arles

This is the main page created with Front Page

Arles created all the thumbnails, html, etc, links etc...

I have a server at home that I'd like to host the pics from. I have a networked MP3/HD/Photo server appliance (the Roku Photobridge) that I use to display pics on my plasma. I'm using Photoshop Album to organize and tag all my photos (you can tag by events, people, places, etc. and cross reference them). The database is actually MS Access-readable, but the tag information is binary (and hence not really useful to me), though, so if there were a Photoshop Elements API that I could hook into (using C#, probably), I could build a pretty cool, totally dynamic, and interactive web-gallery of all the photos I put into my final catalog.

As an aside, my Roku device supports UPnP AV (Univeral Plug and Play AV) for music, photo, and video browsing, and I've found a UPnP AV server (Twonkyvision) that _should_ be able to read the Photoshop Album database format and present a logical tree view of all the tags. That might be one way to attack the problem, but I can't find any good sample code for a UPnP client that might be able to make requests of a UPnP server. Intel has a developer's toolkit, but I haven't looked too closely at it.

I am using www.blogspot.com to write up the actual trip log, but I'd just as soon install something on my own server for that. I just haven't found one (any suggestions?). Can you install the blogspot software on your own server? ...waits while Matthew googles a bit... There is one called Community Server that I might try.

I did something up last year that uses XML data files to represent my trips and photo galleries, but with the proliferation of blogging sites and software, I'd rather just use something canned. The photo stuff, though, would be very cool to figure out.

Strange that the tags would be binary. ODBC would be a likely candidate to read the database into your program of choice.

Of course, it sounds like some re-inventing of the wheel, especially if its to be used just once. Then again, I learned Arles, mostly for this project. But I was able to use it again for selling my e36 M3 (which worked with exquisite timing). And I like the program and especially the output control much better than the Microsoft Powertoy slide show creator.

Be sure to post when you get it done, it should be a good write-up!

ODBC is the way that I would go about reading the database directly, sure, but since the tag information is binary, that makes it a little more challenging.

If I just wanted to create a static web gallery with a certain set of pictures, Photoshop Album would do that for me, too, and use the captions, etc. That might do OK in the near term.

Honestly, I think it would be cool to figure out how to (A) interface with the PS Album database, and/or (B) interface with the UPnP server.

.

HE!HE!HE! another happy Nalley BMW customer. I am glad for your wife. A bit slow on the pictures this time around though. I looked at your previous ED trip pictures and your trip pumped me up for mine. Enjoy the wheels.
