 Boat Notification Letter

June 08, 2005

Dealer name and address

Re: Boat Notification for your European Delivery Customer

Chassis - (last seven of VIN)

BMW has been notified that your customer's European Delivery vehicle is expected to arrive at the US Port of Entry on 06/08/05 aboard the vessel Pacific Breeze.

Upon arrival, the vehicle must first clear U.S. Customs and Department of Agriculture inspections before it is released to the Vehicle Distribution Center. Please note that these inspections have recently become more thorough resulting in longer processing times. The VDC treats every European Delivery car as a priority, but the processing time will be longer if any repairs are needed. It may take up to twenty business days from the actual docking date at the port for the car to reach the dealership.

Once it departs the VDC, it will be transported to your dealership for re-delivery to your customer. We recommend that you notify your customer when the vehicle arrives so that they can schedule a delivery appointment.

Thank you,

European Delivery Department
BMW of North America, LLC

[End of letter - Received June 10]

Noteworthy items:

1. Statement in letter dated June 8 that the "boat" is expected to arrive at the port of entry on June 8 (thirteen days! after leaving Bremerhaven). Normal time on the ship for west coast redelivery should be about 25 days.
2. On June 11 at 0830 PT, Pacific Breeze is anchored waiting to transit the Panama Canal. The ship is expected by the Port of San Diego to arrive there on June 18. I expect it to arrive at Port Hueneme on June 20.
3. Up to twenty business days from actual docking to arrival at dealer! I think that this is a euphemism for four weeks or 28+ days! It is not completely clear that this extended time frame is intended to allow for repairs, but I would certainly expect that it would.

IF the car came in clean there is no way it should be at the VPC more than a week.

From what I've been seeing it is a week miniumum, so this is just a plain wrong statement.
Raywaski and Uncle Fester just took more than a week, and how about PittBMW. My car took exactly a week.

Wow John, amazing... Did you post pictures of Pacific Breeze? You must be on a hover craft hauling arse! Oh, oh... perhaps your car is being delivered to the east coast!

Just for fun (and because I cannot resist ) I will stick my nose in here. I agree with Marcus that (if clean) there is no way it SHOULD be at the VDC for more than a week. Then we get into the esoterica: If the ship arrives on Day 1, it should clear customs on Day 2 and VDC should get it on Day 3. My guess is that if there has been no damage that the car will be released by VDC on or before Day 10 90% of the time. Then it is a function of how long the wait is for a truck and how long the trip is. I suspect that the average wait for a truck is 3 days and the average delivery time is 2 days or less. (Well over half the cars are probably delivered within 1,000 miles.) Thus for a clean car the average time from hitting port until hitting dealer should be fifteen (calendar, not business) days or less. I think the data bear this out, but we do not have much data.

I have not been able to find a pic of PB and I missed it going through Gatun Locks. I am afraid I will also miss it going through the other locks. (Perhaps I really do have a life.) I think PB went directly from Southampton to the Canal. Somehow the ED desk is screwed up on my car, first thinking it was on Procyon Leader and then messing up the POE date. I am 90% confident that I am on PB and am 60% confident that it will arrive at Pt H on or before 6/20. I am now 50% confident that the car will hit the dealer on or before July 2, 12 days after hitting Pt. H. July 1 will be seven weeks after Munich dropoff.
