Changing oil/trans/differential oil at 1200 seems a good idea, especially after initial break-in and before really hitting the autobahn on ED. Is this a part of the standard "everything for first 50,000 mi" BMW deal, or an extra that the owner chooses to do? How likely that while on ED a European dealer could fit you in without delaying your trip?
I assume that BMW initially puts in a "break-in" oil, probably not best for post-break-in hard driving. Is this correct?
Thanks for any info.

I haven't heard of the initial oil being any different. There is a required 1200 mile service to change fluids however.

Its the differential oil, that requires change at appx. 1,200 miles. BMW will not pay for the engine oil change at 1,200 miles. They do not use any type of "Break-In" oil for the engine, and only uses Castrol TWS (10 W 60), aka Racing Synthetic, for the M3.
I don't know what the deal is w/ the differential, and why BMW insist on changing it at 1,200 miles on the M cars. It may have to to w/ the fact its a LSD.

My owner's manual states that the 1200 mile service requires changing the engine oil, diff and transmissions fluids.

Interesting, I just RTFM and on page 5 of my Service and Warranty Information, it states change of transmission fluid and differential oil, the oil change IS NOT part of the deal on the S62 engine 2002 M5. However, the M-coupe/Roadster/M3 is.
OTOH, the box for M-coupe/Roadster/M3 is not checked on change of trasmission fluids.
Oh well....
