I have been thinking about purchasing a used car in Europe for export to the US. Has anyone done that? Does it make any sense? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks,

Where in Europe? I only have a passing knowledge of the UK. In this case the exchange rate would not seem to be great right now against the Pound.
Also, how would this car meet US Motor Vehicle Safety Standards?
We re-imported our US spec 92 Honda Accord in 98 and had no real problems. Our 67 Mini Cooper came in under the "older" vehicle laws and also had no problems there.
Many folks do European delivery but these cars are to US standards (as far as I know.)
Does not seem like a great idea to me...what did you have in mind specifically?

I actually would like to ship the car from Europe to Central America. I am looking for a '00-'01 330D Touring (which is very hard to find used here). Therefore, I don't think emissions issues would be relevant.

Thanks, | Back in the 80's people used to do that with mercedes and BMW's and paid for the US upgrade(emissions) and shipping. Back then it was worth it, but now with the euro exchange you'd get creamed. Also cars in Europe are very expensive. A brand new 04 525i in Spain costs about 50,000 euros. I am sure a used bmw will still be more expensive than here. Go on ebay motors, you may find that rare model. Good luck

When I shopped around in Germany last year 5ers were about 20% more than in the US... I assume its similar for other models. Doesn't make sense to me unless you could get the VAT back and even then, probably not a better deal than ED if you have to modify to meet DOT.
