Lookout! The gloves are off.

6 months ago Sirius had approx. 1.2 million subscribers and xm had approximately 5 million.

Now as of the beginning of the new year, and partly because they signed Howard Stern, Sirius has over 3.3 million subscribers.

Sirius added over 2 million subscribers in the same timeframe XM only added 1 million.

Also, for those folks who think Sirius overpaid Howard, here is some simple math.

If 20% of BMW buyers in the US, bought Sirius radio for their cars over the next 5 years, and kept the service for 5 years, that alone, would be enough to pay the $500 million to Stern. Think about all the other cars, portables, etc.

I love healthy competition, we all benefit.

Sirius also signed Martha Stewart at $30 million.

According to Stern, XM is terrible to negotiate with. Management has no power and is slow to respond.

XM wanted Stern but could not stop tripping over themselves to make the deal work.

Sirius sealed a deal in short order.

My prediction, and you heard it here first....

Sirius will overtake XM in sales within the next 12-14 months.

Also, Stern has never discussed his 'deal'. He was given $220M in shares last week which may be part of the supposed $500M

Stern's deal is based based on company performance.

Stern's current deal is $650 million based on the current value of the stock. Over 5 years, he has the potential to make over 1 billion once they start advertising on his two channels.

Looks like the only mistake Sirius has made is underestimating demand. My brother has been searching for a second radio (for his wife's car) and hasn't been able to find one for weeks.
