Leaving Boston tomorrow for Monday pick-up. Haven't been to Munich in 17 years but did manage to drink my fill at the Hofbrauhaus which I would like to replicate on this trip. Realizing its a tourist trap, its still something I want to show my wife. Any other recommendations in Munich? We're staying at the Meridien so fairly central... what are my other choices for a traditional, cavernous beer hall we're everyone's drinking at big picnic tables and socializing??

I like the Augustiner-Bräu at Neuhauserstr. 27 in the Altstadt. It is quite central and you can easily end up sharing a table with someone who is fun to talk to.

Good info. Is the Augustiner a hall or more of a pub/restaurant? Can't really tell from the pictures - sorry to be so picky....

It is a 19th-century decor beer hall that also serves filling meals. I could go there for either or better yet both.

I liked the chinese tower beer garden the best! It's in the english garden, munich.
