 best portable nav on ED?

Hello All,

I'm planning an ED trip, and was wondering if anyone has used a portable GPS\Nav unit for travelling around in Europe. I'm thinking of skipping the Nav option on the 530i I want to order, and getting a portable GPS\Nav for use when I'm over in Germany. Another option I was contemplating was using my laptop with navigation software, has anyone done this? Any recommendations is appreciated.

thanks

I know a fellow bimmerfester that went around the same time as me had a laptop with software and paid very little. He mentioned it worked great. Hopefully he'll read your post and comment. I had Nav. and it made the trip so much easier. Even when i get the car back home it will be a cool gadget for someone who gets lost pretty easily.

Agreed. Interestingly the Nav booklet says the built-in Nav has an internal compass so it can tell direction AND is tied into wheel sensors so it can tell when you are in a turn. (Thus you will note it immediately goes to the next direction when you are initiating the current instruction.) Can't get that in aftermarket options.

Yeah, the NAV will cost you 1640 but BMW really improved it immensely over the E39 version and the I-Drive integration worked very well. Interesting note, BMW has not changed the price of the NAV option since at least 2001...that was when I got the NAV as an option in my 2001 530i.

I think it is totally worth it and it should help resale value if that is important to you. You can't beat the seamless integration into the car either.

Whenever I think about buying a BMW, I always take the base price and immediately add 10k and that is what I consider the 'true' cost of the car. As it turns out, after I add up all the options "I gotta have", it is always right around 10k....

I can't find the other post, otherwise I would have linked it up for you. I think the guys were talking about a Garmin. I have a laptop with MS Streets and eTrex. It works well, but is bulky. I just got a hand-held dell with a bluetooth gps & rand mcnally. The map is causing some issues that I hope to work through. I think the in-car nav is the best, and a bit more expensive ($1,700 vs about $1,000). The "build-your-own-teddy" is a bit more time consuming, cheaper, portable; & at times tempramental.

Since you have the Hand Held Dell consider Mapopolis with the European Maps. It's works pretty darned well.
