 My European Delivery Nightmare

I really wish I could tell you guys that I've been driving my beautiful new 330 around Europe for the last week having the time of my life but I can't.

The short version of the story:
I go to pick up my car Monday morning at the ED Center and everything looks fine except the loaner navigation DVD from Beewang doesn't work (Bee's still da man). I'm bummed that I have to run down to the dealership (thanks to this forum I know exactly where it is) and shell out the euros for a new one, but I'm not going to let that ruin my 3-week-long perfect vacation.

270 Euros and 3 disks later we figure out it wasn't a bad DVD at all. The entire Car Control Computer (CCC) that runs the navigation system and a lot of other components is bad and there's no way it can be fixed in less that 3 days. We had to be in Nice (8 hours away) the next night to pick up some friends at the airport and work for a few days so that was no good. I was given several options by a variety of BMW representatives:
A) Find somewhere to have the brand-spanking-new (and so damn sexy) 330 fixed in France.
B) Deal without navigation for the next 3 weeks and have it fixed at re-delivery. One of the biggest reasons I paid for navigation was just for these 3 weeks.
C) File a road-side assistance claim and get a rental car (non-BMW).

After 9 hours, visits to two dealers, being told I had no warranty in Europe and that no one could touch my car to fix it, I finally returned to the ED Center where they at least tried to fix the car. After realizing it was a real big deal to swap out the whole CCC, I finally convinced them to just send it back to the factory, give me a loaner X3 with navigation and I'd come back from France early even though it was a full expense paid trip with work.

I might actually get to drive my new car next Friday "finally" after two weeks of waiting. I'm attaching the long-version of the story that I'm sending to BMW NA in case anyone is interested.

Matt

When I started reading the story, I was expecting to read that the car wasn't there or that it caught on fire and was destroyed. Instead, the disaster you write about is that the car's navigation system didn't work? I have had one, perhaps two, Munich deliveries that were worse than that, but out of respect for those out there (I am sure they exist) who have had it even worse than me, I won't recount them.

If I were in your shoes, I would have resolved to continue my vacation the old fashioned way -- with maps and a sense of adventure -- and looked forward to getting lost, asking directions and discovering all sorts of fun and interesting things you only find when you get off the beaten track and out of your comfort zone.

The Friemann Delivery center should have taken care of that issue on the spot. On my last Euro Delivery I had the exact same "please insert disc" message on the nav screen upon delivery. The delivery center was nice enough to loan me a nav disc, so they knew the issue was with the computer, not their disc.

They took the car back through the inside garage doors. Two hour later, they ended up replacing the nav computer. In the E39, it's far less complicated than the E90, just a simple swap-out. Bottom line was they took responsibility to resolve the issue.

In any case, have a wonderful vacation. It's bad, but it could have been worse.

So the lesson for all EuroDev buyers is resolve any issues before leaving the delivery center.

Or try to.

But wasn't it an American who once wrote "so convenient a thing it is to be a reasonable creature, since it enables one to find or make a reason for everything one has a mind to do"? I would have probably gotten annoyed by the non-working navigation system but then used that as my excuse for going off anyway and getting lost. (Got to look after that male pride. )
