I'm doing ED in mid February. I really wanted to drive to Italy (perhaps Venice/Florence or Lake como). Is it going to be safe to drive through Austria to get to Italy? My understanding is that it's all mountains (Alps) through Austria, ie Insbrook. Is the main highway safe to travel on with my new car on Z-rated tires? Obvioulsy I won't have snow tires out there.

In the Alps they were fine, but as we got farther south, the roads of the road seemed to change. Lines are for driving down, not between. That, and remember is the guy-being-passed's job to miss the car pulling back into his lane. Still, much easier than driving the expressways around Chicago. Snow I can't comment on in Italy, since it was summer.

Yes, no problem whatsoever. But the Northern Italians will tell you to go no farther south then Rome. IE: You may want to avoid Napoli and below. I spent a bunch of time in Italy on my last ED and will be doing so again this trip. For certain Florence / Tuscany and over to the Mediterraneo.

I'm more worried about the stretch through the Alps in February. It doesn't look too far on the maps, but if the car can't stay planted on the road it will be one scary ride.
Also, how long does it take, realistically, to drive from Munich to Venice. It looks like 300KM, but BMw's ED guid says the trip will take 2 days (or 2 times 6 hours). Anyone with real world experience here? Thanks

I drove from Vicenza to Munich during the daylight hours with a stop in Brennero and Innsbruck. Again, it was no problem, easy drive, good highway all the way. Was a bit of snow at the top of Brennero, (May) but not on the roads. Nice drive, good roads, I'm doing it in March no doubt.
