One thing I noticed while in Munich was the paucity of any cars older than 10 years. I saw very very few e30's, etc...
Is there an incentive to buy newer cars there?

They have a VERY strict Safety/Pollution (smog) standard upon renewal of registration. If the car doesn't meet either, you will not be issued tags and the car is as good as a piece of furniture.

German vehicle inspection laws (TUV) are very strict. So most older cars fail for body integrity and related reasons, keeping them off the roads. But there are a few very nice ones. We were lent a beautiful MB 219 (late 1950s) in June 2003. That Fall I saw a great Lancia Flavia Zagato Sport on the Munich ring road.
