I am picking up my car in a week, and I am curious....
I understand the car is covered by ED insurance while driving in Europe. But what happens after I drop off the car? What happens if the truck gets in an accident and the car is totalled? What happens if the car is totalled on the ship? Is BMW the loss payee or am I....or both of us?
I assume the car is covered all the way from ED pickup until I get it from my dealer stateside; is this correct? I also assume I do not need to start my insurance until I pick up the car from the dealer at redelivery, correct?
Thank you.

Yup, that is correct.

It is all cover by different policies. For example: when I dropped mine off in Nice the guy told me he was checking for any damage prior to shipping so if there were any damage they would blame it on transporting or shipping for their policy to cover. The ED insurance covers you 100% unless you decide to not get a replacement BMW then there is a 10%deductible, otherwise you get another equivalent vehicle. Don't worry BMW really has their act together. You can actually do a search here, recently there was a person that had their car totalled on ED.

Thanks guys.
Thanks also for the explanation of the deductible; I had wondered about that.
I think I am out of questions....time to get the car and have some fun.

No, it is not time yet.... But it may be in about 147 hours. Although now there is some talk about not heading over to Freimann first thing.... I hope to see you Sunday night, if you and we are up to it. It should be awfully convenient with three of us at LM.

Keep track of the car and once you have a date when it will be at the port it is time to notify your insurance company and add it to your policy. You must keep in mind that you own the car once you pick it up in Germany and the policy which you get covers you and the car in Europe and on the ship, but there is some question of whether it covers the car once it if offloaded from the ship. There is no reason to take a chance so simply add it to your policy when the ship arrives.
