Driving through Slovakia
Does anybody know the speed limits and driving/road conditions on the way from Vienna to Koscice (eastern Slovakia)? I think the main road is called D1 but how many lanes are there? | | Reply » Driving through Slovakia | I'd like to piggyback on this one...Is it safe? Are you aware of any problems along the road ? Thanks

Thanks | Based on my experience driving there in '92, it's safe. I don't recall what road number I drove on, but if it's not marked as Highway on the map (thick yellow line or thick red line) then it will most likely be a 2 lane winding road that will hit every town and village.
If that's the case, it will be scenic, but slow. I doubt you can average more than 35mph on such a road, so plan accordingly. You may also want to review your overtaking skills, you're quite likely to encounter countless slow trucks, farm equipment, bycicles and pedestrians.
Slovakia is only slightly less "advanced" than the Check Republic. Well at least according to local, Eastern European wisdom. To your western eyes, there should be very little difference.
The only thing I'd worry about is finding a good secure parking for the night - and for the days as well. Just ask your hotel clerk or maybe some other board members can give you some pointers. And never - NEVER - leave anything in the car. When in that region, no matter what I drive, I never leave anything visibly behind (not sunglasses, not paper towels, not bags or cameras, not phones - you get the idea).
Have fun,

They did to me, since I would be driving through the Czech Republic. Just be 100% sure your hotel has secured parking. Secured garage parking is even better. But above all, have fun- they are part of the EU now, so with a little common sense you'll have a blast. Post pics!
